SuffolkVera Report 24 Aug 2022 11:25

Morning everyone

It was a hectic day yesterday and I am just waiting for a friend to pick me up so may go dashing off suddenly.

OH’s sister sadly lost her husband yesterday. So there were emails and phone calls going back and forth. The car was collected to be taken for a service and MOT. Late yesterday afternoon the garage rang to say they had done the service but couldn’t complete the MOT as a machine had broken down so we haven’t got the car back yet.

Hope your dodgy tum feels easier now Mel.

Got to go. Lift has just arrived. Might bbl.

Annx Report 24 Aug 2022 10:41

Morning All,

Hope your tum soon settles Mel. It might have been the cream cakes as you say. That seems a long time now to your re-booked dental appointment. You'd think they would have had something sooner. These things that will crop up and need to be dealt with will be upsetting.

Mandy my beans are not going to pick up so I think we'd better get rid. The toms are like yours and looking good with pickings every day. Yes Max needs to watch Monty and learn what to pull out! lol.

Hair appointment for me next and I can't decide what to wear. If they have switched the aircon off I need something cool on, but if not, long trousers would be best as I need to sit with wet hair for about an hour for this appointment. Better get my skates on though as Jane would have said.

Morning Mandy and all,

Coudy here and rain like mist in the air 18 degrees.

Is it Montbretia Mandy? I have a very tall one and the deer eat the flowers.

Got up at 6.33am and went back to bed and got up at 9.33am how weird is that? I seem to have a gurgley tummy this morning so I don't think the cream cakes agreed with me nor the mustard on the rolls I had last night.

I shan't be going far today.

Had two emails this morning canceling our dentist appointments which was a bit upsetting and now they are for the day before my birthday.

Morning all,

Very cloudy here but really muggy , not a lot happening here just need a good hoover round and a bit of dead heading to do in the garden ,the cucumbers are looking sorry for themselves lots of brown leaves that can come off ,tomatoes have slowed down but still lots of green ones on the plants ,the runners now have tiny little beans on them so we might get a few more pickings .
Max has just brought in half the garden little minx he keeps pulling up the oh I forget the name of if now but it has long stems of orange flowers, I must teach him which ones are weeds then he'd be a great help in the garden lol .

Ha ha, yes Gnasher was also Dennis the Menace's dog wasn't he. I bet Mandy is hoping she will see him before he sees her, so she can duck if she's overcome with the giggles. :-D I'm glad you got some of your meds today too Mandy. It's a worry and you wonder if the same will happen next time they are due as well.

I bet those cream cakes were lovely Mel. It was very thoughtful to leave you some. Yes, we don't often have breakfast when we are at home, but have an early lunch between 11.30am and 12.30pm which is our main meal. Even when we ate out before the pandemic some of the carveries opened at 11.30am nd we liked to be there then when the food was nice and fresh and untouched so to speak. I haven't done anymore sorting today. I managed to do a 1 lap walk this morning, the first since it got so hot. My knee clunked and twinged a few times, but not too bad and has been no worse since, thank goodness. It was quite muggy, but there was a bit of breeze then and the ducks and moorhens wolfed it down the crusts I took.

It's been really noisy here today with the slab saw screaming on the front garden opposite and concrete mixer going, then early lorry deliveries to the house and a lot of banging from the workmen. Then the binmen came in their supersized lorry that snorts! Then the neighbour next door seems to have a new noisy gadget he was doing something to the drive with. Then just after 5.00pm the noise of the Police Helicopter and where did it decide to hover for ages.........straight above us. We later saw there had been an accident and lanes closed on the motorway, but OH had shut and locked the doors in case a madman was on the loose! It was still circling and hovering till a few minutes ago.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 23 Aug 2022 18:48

I like Gnasher I had to laugh at that Mandy.

Done a bit more sorting today. Had some cakes left on the doorstep but I think it may have been from Bex next door as her mum had her 60t birthday party in the village hall on Saturday night.

I had two of the cream cakes for lunch and I am going to do a burger in a mo with salad. I had a look at that Sinniker thing and you would'nt get me up there. I could'nt even look down in the car park in Barnstable untill oh told me to stand sideways and look. It was much better and you don't feel like you are falling forward. So that a good tip to remember if you should want to look down from a great height.

MillymollyAmanda Report 23 Aug 2022 18:16

Evening all,

Warm today we've had the fan back on again .

Hope Anng enjoyed going up the Spinniker ,I see there's a glass floor you can walk over ,there's a glass floor in Blackpool Tower but I couldn't walk over it it was enough for me just trying to look down over the glass ,I didn't mind the height of tower the views were lovely.

We gave been gigging all say about Mr teeth ,we heard him talking over the wall to someone and Colin started me off by saying it's Gnasher :-D :-D then I had visions of him looking over the wall looking like Mr Ed the talking horse .

Ann thats good OH got his tablets sorted ,I went into Boots this morning and they had some of mine but still owe me some more but at least I have some to keep me going.

Island Report 23 Aug 2022 16:04

Vera, did you have to suggest second hand gnashers? I'm still chortling as I type LOL :-D They might be the goofy teeth that little boys bought in seaside holiday shops.
Meds shortages seem to be on the increase - pharmacists more so! :-0

You have an early lunch Ann.

Shopping came and it all fitted in one box. I was waiting for him to get another crate out of the van but he said thats it. There was one sub and that was a selection of cream cakes instead of choc eclairs so you know what I am having for lunch! A cream doughnut.

He was really early too before 11am when he was expected. I was just going to feed the chickens when he drove down the drive.

I am now gooing to attempt to do the electoral roll online. Wish me luck.

Annx Report 23 Aug 2022 11:52

Morning All,

Well that did make us both chuckle Mandy. :-D OH said perhaps he should have kept MIL's false teeth and put them on ebay! I wonder if they are some I've seen advertised that are a set you push over the top of your existing teeth and any gaps? You'll have to practice keeping a straight face ready for when you next see him! I just hope he won't look like Shergar coming towards you. lol. :-D

Could you add some cleaning or washing stuff or toilet rolls to make your order up to £40 this time Mel. They will keep and only go up in price so it could be a saving. You might find it easier to change to a fortnightly order like we have and the BOB and Cravendale milk will keep for a fortnight. It was probably good to have a break and chat yesterday. Sometimes we get on better after a break.

AnnG I had a look at the Spinnaker and thought I would have been waiting at the bottom with T. I'm not keen on heights although I went up in a hot air balloon for my 40th birthday! I had to pretend to look through my camera till we were up in the air though and then slowly peeped over it. I wonder if the lift is on the outside. Glass ones like that would give me the heebie jeebies too.

Well OH got a call from the surgery pharmacist who was visiting there this morning and they have sourced some of the meds he is missing and sent a fresh prescription to a chemist 2 miles away for him to collect this afternoon. What good service and, as they issue 2 months worth at a time, he will be ok for a while now.

Dealing with dementia or even just frail parents is a terrible problem as you say Vera. MIL never had dementia but both were very set in their ways. Both had osteoporosis in their latter years, FIL having broken his back due to it, but because they were used to shopping every day, even after he gave up his car at age 93 they would have a taxi to go shopping every day rather than get even 2 days shopping at once. We went through the long process of getting them all kinds of help with dressing, cleaning, changing their bed and arranging for a shower to be fitted through a charity and they cancelled the lot. People came at the 'wrong' time for them, they stupidly struggled with their osteoporosis to remake the bed the helper had changed for them because it wasn't done the way they were used to. They gave the microwave we bought for them away.

OOps time for lunch now.....BBL

Morning all,

I was up at 6.25am but went back to bed for a while but just seemed to aly there but when I decided I needed a drink and came out it was 9am. So did I drop off or not? I don't know.

Its bright and sunny and then it clouds over a bit and pc says 18 degrees and sunny so we will see if its right later on.

Don't know what to do about asda as I had a job finding things to reach the forty pounds so I ordered 6 bottles of wine but I won't need anymore for 6 weeks at least. I have a chest freezer full to overflowing so I could probably live out of that for a year. Today my driver is Jamie and I don't think I have had him before.

Better get in the shower and get dressed.

AnninGlos Report 23 Aug 2022 07:22

Good morning all, a bright sunny morning and 18 degrees. Daughter said yesterday that the temperature started to rise as they got to Lancaster yesterday but they came through heavy rain near Birmingham. No rain here.

Sometimes Mel there is so much to be done that nothing gets done. I found that that was my brain telling me to take a break and rest so it was good that you could have a chat with Di. The phone cutting out might have been a child playing with a phone, random numbers or somebody realising they were dialling the wrong number.

Mandy Eew Like Vera I wondered if the teeth are new or second hand. And, as he still has teeth are the replacements in the right places. That is the stuff of nightmares.

Vera yes I have seen the Spinnaker from below many times and watched people abseiling down it too. Hopefully tomorrow will be a clear day, be just our luck to have to go up on a misty day.

Gwyn, not sure how I will know how far I can see, not sure what landmarks to look for, maybe there is a chart that tells you.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 22 Aug 2022 21:46

It doesn't matter if you only got a little bit done today Mel, just take one step at a time. My computer usually gets the weather somewhere near right during the day but can be odd at night.. At the moment it's saying it's 20 degrees and partly sunny which is interesting as the sun set a while ago and it's quite dark now.

I've been to Portsmouth and seen the Spinnaker from the bottom but haven't ventured up to the top. We did visit the dockyard when we were there last. Safe journey tomorrow AnnG and have a lovely time at the wedding celebration.

That's terrible about your OH's meds Ann. I hope he gets them soon or the doctor can suggest something else suitable for him.

I think I've heard everything now Mandy. False teeth from ebay :-S Whatever next. Do you think these are one-size-fits-all new teeth or are they second hand? You must tell us how the gentleman looks in them when you next see him. Perhaps he'll give you a nice big smile.

Yes, our friend is a worry to her family and she would be safer in a care home but you can't just "put" someone in a home if they don't want to go, at least not until they become a real danger.. Tbh, she would be very unhappy and would probably just give up. Physically she is amazingly fit for her age. Her family do the best they can. They pay for someone to come in early every morning to check that she is up and OK. She moans all the time about them wasting their money and she doesn't need anyone coming in but it gives them peace of mind. The family also have a midday dinner delivered to her and one of them checks on her every evening. One dil takes her shopping every so often and another one goes once a week and sorts out all her paperwork, bill paying etc. .

Dementia is a terrible problem. My father was already physically quite disabled and partially blind when dementia got to him and he became a danger to himself and others. We found a couple of good care homes near to where I was living at the time but he refused point blank to even consider them because he couldn't see that he needed care. In the end my saint of a brother gave up a job he loved to care for our father himself. It was a 24/7 job and, even with the little help I was able to gi ve, my brother wasn't far short of having a breakdown himself. So many families have awful decisions to make and have a terrible time trying to care for their loved ones.

I think I'd better stop before I end up reducing myself to tears. I'll think about Mandy's neighbour and the teeth and that'll make me laugh. Sleep well everyone. Night, night.

I forgot my scripts on Saturday too Mandy its always the same nless I write in big letters at the top of the list.

My phone was playing up today it rang and whenI answered it it cut off. This is the landline. it happened again and I knew who it was so rang them back but they were engaged then It happened again and then rang again but this time I got it ok. It was Di my friend so after a good chat with her I rang the other number and spoke to Val for a while. Not got much sorted today but a bit and every bit helps. I am trying to get out everything that needs to go to the bin men who come on Thursday.

Enjoy your time away Anng and safe journey for you all.

Silly pc is telling me its partly sunny and 16 degrees. We have had no sun all day just cloudy sky and that fine rain in the air.

Hope you all sleep well tonight.

Evening all,

It's been a nice dry day and the washing soon got dry ,we did a trip to the tip and I went into Tesco to get a few bits and to use the cash machine , we sat out this afternoon but a out four o'clock we felt a spit of rain so came in but if didn't come to anything .

Ann I'm still waiting for some tablets from boots from my last prescription, she said she would ring when they had them in and I haven't heard a thing ,I've now put another prescription in again for my other tablets so it's nearly the month round .

Anng safe lourney tomorrow it will a nice family gathering by the sound of it ,I shall have a Google to see what this Spinniker is .

Vera thats good you managed to calm your friend after the afternoon tea ,but a worry for her family , she could go out and stand by the roadside any day thinking its the afternoon tea again .
What a good spread there was and it goes to show that people love home made desserts if they went first .

Something to make you smile , an elderly neighbour that lives in a flat by the side of us came past as we were out in the garden ,he popped his head over the wall and we had a chat for a few minutes and he got on about his teeth , he said I hope I don't get tooth ache while I'm on holiday like I did on holiday in May ,he's off to Portugal in October ,I've had a few out but they want five hundred pounds for some dentures ,so I've sent for some teeth off ebay :-D :-D now how am I going to keep a straight face when he looks over the wall with these teeth in his mouth :-D goodness knows what they are going to look like.
Colin has just said we never got petrol this morning and it's the very thing we went out for after the tip .

My PC has reverted to Fahrenheit again......how odd!

It sounds like you had a good time Vera with plenty of food choice. Your Tangerine Dream must have been really good the way it disappeared quickly! What a time with your friend with dementia and the sausage roll saga. It sounds like you handled it very well, giving her an explanation she went along with and will soon forget about. It does make you wonder how much longer she'll be safe in her home though. It's sad, and must be confusing for her, but so nice you are all including her as much as you can.

AnnG
I hope the weather is good, so that you have clear views from The Spinnaker... you can see for many miles, if the conditions are right..... I think we were told Chichester to Southampton and of course across to the Isle of Wight.
I like Old Portsmouth, but as you say, it's not good for parking, so it's good that your hotel is nearby the venue.
It will be lovely to be able to celebrate the wedding together.

Lovely day here,- sunny with just the gentlest of breezes.
I went for a walk with a friend and her friend and now have to get on and do some sorting out in the kitchen. I seem to have collected far too many 'that will come in useful' containers,so I am going to be realistic and just keep the bare minimum... perhaps I will have a bit more space for things then.

Vera daughter and son in law are arriving this afternoon and we travel down tomorrow. we have Wednesday free as DiL wants to visit the dockyard and we also have tickets to go up the Spinniker (if you don't know what that is you can google it.) I have never been up as T didn't like heights and I wouldn't go on my own.

the wedding celebrations start at 11.30, not sure what time it finishes. Besides all daughter's family and her late husband's family and the couple's friends, and us, there will also be my son and his wife and a couple of friends who have known Greg since he was a baby. It will be nice to see everyone but I am also sure that it will be tiring. Luckily the hotel where we are staying is not too far from the location of the wedding party so we can walk as parking is horrendous round that area.

SuffolkVera Report 22 Aug 2022 13:04

23 degrees here now but there is a bit of a breeze so it doesn't feel too bad. I got the washing on early so 3 loads are on the line, that's all our clothing and all the bedding for the last week, and towels are in the wash now. They'll be a while as I give them a longer, hotter wash.

How nice to have a celebration with family AnnG, though it was hard on the young couple not to be able to have all their family there on their big day. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time. Is someone driving you there and back for the trip or have you got to try to get there by public transport?

I've got a Sainsbury delivery this afternoon. They have sent me an email saying "Good News. We have everything you asked for in today's order". Not quite true. I placed the order last week. When I went in on Saturday to add a few bits the website told me that 2 of the things that I had ordered were now out of stock and suggesting subs. I didn't want the subs they offered so the items were just taken off my order and I have to go and try and get them elsewhere. I checked over the bill and just about everything had gone up in price. I understand about shortages, production costs, transport costs etc, etc but I still think there is a bit of profiteering going on.

The garden party went well yesterday. The weather was perfect, comfortably warm and dry but without the blazing sun. We got there at 12.30 and it broke up about 6.30 so it we were there a good long while. The hostess had a few garden games out so we made fools of ourselves with quoits and darts with soft velcro to stick to the board rather than the sharp points. She had also made a "Splat the Rat" thingie with a bit of drainpipe attached to a step ladder and a furry dog toy. It was all very silly but created lots of laughter and made it a fun afternoon. The food was good with plenty of variety which always amazes us as no-one knows what anyone is taking. There were sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls, some salad bits for mains and then a variety of desserts and a cheese board and grapes for puds. I don't know what my Mandarin Dream turned out like as it went very quickly and I didn't get a taste. I think it was because it was homemade. Someone had made some mini pavlovas and they went quickly as well. The rest of the desserts were shop bought.

We had a slight problem with our friend with dementia. Another of the gang was picking her up at her house at 12 noon. At 11 one of her sons who lives locally drove to her house to check she had remembered and was getting herself ready and found her waiting on the busy main road where we often picked her up a few years ago when she was more able. He told her she was an hour early and took her back home, giving her some sausage rolls he'd bought for her to take to the party. All went well from then on until it was time to go. The lady driving her home and I were in the dining room with her and putting some leftover sausage rolls in a bag for her to take home when she started hunting round the room. Apparently she was looking for a tin and plate she had brought with her. We said that she had just brought in the packet from the shop to be fiercely told "I never buy sausage rolls. I made those and put them in a tin to bring and also had a nice plate to put them out on". Of course years ago she would have done exactly that. She was Queen of the Cooker and made beautiful cakes and pastries. As she was getting a bit worked up I suggested someone else had picked her tin and plate up with their own things by mistake and taken them home but would bring them back to the next club meeting. She seemed satisfied with that and I am hoping that by the next meeting she will have forgotten all about it. It seems so sad but thankfully we are still able to include her in most of our group activities and various people take her out for a coffee or have it to their homes. so she still recognises us and knows our names.

OH has just called out that he's made us a sandwich so I had better go and eat it.
