Phoned up our friend to wish her a happy birthday for tomorrow thinking that she and her hubby would have the day out tomorrow. She then dropped a bomb shell - her hubby has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He is only 61. It was their daughter's wedding that we went to in UK in December. I am so shocked - although as my hubby has just said to me it could be worse as it is not terminal. I just hope and pray that medication will slow down his illness.

Thanks Jean and Annie. It was just a shick . suppose it brings home the fact that we are all getting older!!!

After I told my hubby I just added money and work is not everything - and I thanked my lucky stars that we made the decision to move out to Spain when we did - we had a couple of bad years - but we realised a dream.

Don't apologise Mary, I hope that medication will help him. I am sure it was a shock for them and also you but hope he has many years ahead of a full life.

Mary, please don't feel bad about sharing the news of your friend's hubby's diagnosis, it's what all friends do when they need a hand to hold or a shoulder to lean on.
I am sure that with a positive attitude your friend and her hubby can almost continue their lives as they have planned, they will just need to tweak things a bit but with help from the doctors once the shock is over, they will do just fine.

My Aunt had Parkinson's and still managed to do lots of things she wanted to do, for many years.

Thanks Ann, Liz, Mummo and Cynthia - my friend phoned me up last night and we had a good old chat about things - there is something very important going on in their lives at the moment and 5th July is crunch day - if things go to plan this will take a load of worry off her hubby's shoulders - hers too - so I have everything crossed for them and remembering them in my prayers. The main thing is they are both being positive which is good. I will let you know how things go.

If he has been diagnosed early, there are a lot of new treatments coming out almost monthly that are showing promise.

A very old friend was not diagnosed until several years into the disease and sadly died at 62 eighteen months ago, about 15 years after the first symptoms were noticed, but she was able to fulfill quite a few ambitions including visiting China and the United States before she became too ill.

None of us knows what the future holds, over the last few years I've known several people drop dead unexpectedly from a heart attack in their late 50s or early 60s, so make the most of every day: certainly I never expected a prostate cancer diagnosis earlier this year!

Best wishes to him and hoping that he gets effective treatment.
