til she wrung her chickens neck when it stopped laying !!! lol.

Mum sent me an article from last weeks sunday or saturday Mail magazine...about a woman who kept chickens and did a kind of diary about them...anyone else see it?

Was quite interesting reading the story..first two got *got* by foxes..then they replaced etc.
Anywaaaay...I quite liked the woman til I read that when the chickens stopped laying eggs...she wrung it's neck...and after 20 seconds cut it off with an AXE then ATE it !!!

I know I eat meat...and am partial to chicken...but I'd NEVER eat any of mine !!!! and when they stop laying I'll keep them as pets...would anyone else be able to do what this lady did..or am I just a wuss? lol xx

Sorry can't edit my posts for some reason at the mo...

I just can't imagine serving up *pecky becky* to the girls for lunch lol...I think they'd disown me.

I KNOW it's the way of the world ...and I accept I'm most likely being a total hypocrite...but MY chickens have dif personalities and I'm fond of them in the same way I am my dogs and cats xx

Oooh no the eggs are a real bonus lol.

My G Grandmother did too BC...Dad said he'd actually pick the one out they were going to have for dinner and she'd do the deed there and then lol. Mind you he said he used to pick the one that was highest in the pecking order....and serve it right for being such a bully lol xx

Awwhh Muffy,

My nephew keeps chickens and he rings their necks if NO EGGS !!

As he says he cant afford to feed them if they don't produce eggs.

He sells his eggs to keep the rest of his farm animals.

Awful isn't it .......

Muffyxx Report 25 May 2010 21:09

I guess I can understand if it's business Marilyn...but it's not something I could do.

they don't cost an awful lot to feed...specially if you boil up your peelings and leftovers...Mine don't amount to £5 a month really ..but they're so sweet and friendly...they're worth that for entertainment value alone xx

My husband grandmother, who was Italian and lived on a vineyard in Italy, on my first visit after we were married took me to see her animals. There were chickens and rabbits. She showed me the baby rabbits which were only a couple of days old, then she showed me older bunnies. She did not speak English and I did not speak Italian so when she indicated for me to choose a bunny I naively thought it was for me to hold and stroke. I choose one but she looked at it as so to say it was scrawny and then expertly killed him, right there in front of me. He was dinner.

My husband was very tactful at dinner when I didn't want meat. He told me it was chicken and his grandmother would be offended if I didn't eat it.

I have to say it tasted wonderful but do wish I hadn't seen her kill him

Muffyxx Report 25 May 2010 21:21

Boiled up tthen mashed peelings are what mine usually have Marilyn..along with bread on the turn...and some mixed corn...and parents and friends give me their peelings as well so there's a steady supply.

Not much leftover in this house either and the dogs blag the little that is LOLOLOL.

I'd LOVE to have ducks..and a goat...and a donkey...

*sighs*

I need a lottery win x

I must admit when *cluck* laid her first egg I felt a bit squeamish too Lynda.

But once I recognised the quality compared to shop bought...I soon over came it lol xx

That's life I'm afraid,

As youngsters in the 1950s, we lived on a French farm and used to play with all the animals but were taught from an early age that they were for food.
We became well used to chickens having their necks wrung and rabbits being dispatched with a piece of lead before getting pinned up on the barn door for skinning.

............we did try to keep our favourites around for a few extra days / weeks ;))

Okay - I've done it!!
We rescued a Khaki Campbell drake that our neighbour was keeping with 5 others in a pigeon loft! Come spring - one of them suffered, so we rescued him, and called him Man - Man-drake - get it? LOL!
He was depressed, so we got him a mate, she was called P-eggy.
Peggy lived up to her name - laid loads of eggs - in the woods behind our house - then brought them 'home' after a couple of weeks - cute duckings they were!
Anyhoo - said ducklings grew up etc etc. In the end we kept Peggy and 5 other females - all named, and Manny.
We managed to get the eggs off most of them - but Peggy kept on doing her disappearing/reappearing with 14 ducklings in tow act.
One night , a duckling was bulllied and spent the night in the bath. Ducks (believe it or not) suffer from rheumatism very easily - and the night in the bath did this one no favours.
Sooooo - very heavily pregnant, I fished him out and cuddled him until OH came home at lunchtime, when we despatched him (well away from the others, both out of sight & sound). He was very tasty.
After that, we ate all extraneous ducklings when they had 'proper ' feathers - one each was ample.
However, we didn't feel guilty - those duckings had a lovely (if short) life with us, and were killed very quickly.
We kept the 6 females & Manny until they died (or a fox got them) - we even had a very aged Duck called Cassy - she had a withered leg - who never disappeared - confiming our thoughts that, more often than not, the 'fox' had 2 legs!!!
