Once again thank you all very much indeed for your replies.. Daff your theory as to John being abbreviated to Joh, is good and it's quite possible it was mis-transcribed as Job.

Thanks again

John

Hiya PP... yes, Aunty and I have both looked at it.... as has John.

It really does look like Job... I did wonder if it had been mistranscribed as well.

It does look like Job... why do they change their names... even my dad has done it... and my sister, both my sons, lol

My cousin called her baby Gabriella.... but she is known by everyone as Milly, because my uncle used to sing Milly molly Mandy, sweet as sugar candy to her, lol

Who'd have awkward rellies, eh?

I wondered that also, or if he might have said Joe Bray and it was written down as Job Bray.

However I like your theory about the handwriting.

Sometimes John is shortened to Joh in Censuses... like Wm for William.

I imagine that it could be easily mistranscribed as Job.... given how difficult the handwriting can be, sometimes.

John. Have you had a very careful look at the census image to see if it is a transcription.

Actually I will go take a look myself. Be back in a little while.

Nope you are correct. It is very clearly on the 1841 census as Job Bray.

Thank you for your replies. Trying to trace my Great grandfather x 2 John Bray before 1861. He was born in Shrewsbury circa 1836, and was recorded on the 1861 census for Shrewsbury. Sometime between 1861 and 1871 he moved to Manchester. The closest I have come, is on the 1841 census for Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, there is a John Bray aged 6. Mother and Father Job and Elizabeth Bray. It appears the family moved to Bradford because they are recorded on the 1851 census living in Bradford. Sadly Job had died, because Elizabeth was recorded as being a Widow. I searched the BMD indexes for a death record of a Job Bray the closest I found was a John Bray who died in Bradford in the Apr Quarter of 1850. The reason I believe it could the same person is that Elizabeth had a son Benjamin on the 1851 census who was 10 months old at the time. So Job must of died shortly before or after his son's birth. So I am just wondering is Job another name for John.

The boy's name Job \

job\ is pronounced johb. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "persecuted". Biblical: a man called by God "blameless and upright". Job is proverbial as an example of patience under trial.

Job has 3 variant forms: Joab, Jobe and Joby.

Baby names that sound like Job are Jeb, Ab, Eb, Gib, Ib, Joop and Web.

Job is an uncommon first name for men but a very common last name for both men and women (#13253 out of 88799). (1990 U.S. Census)

..........

I don't quite understand the last bit. I thought it meant common surname as in Mr and Mrs Job, however I think it must mean second given name as in Samuel Job Smith.

Not aware of this. Job is a biblical name in it's own right.
