There's a reason you're looking out for flowers on your early potatoes. The arrival of fully opened flowers is your cue to make an exploratory excavation! This is usually around three months after planting. Approach the plant from the side and carefully lift the tubers with a fork. If you have a fork with flat tines, use it. Otherwise, go gently, trying not to disturb the tubers until you've worked out how big they are.

I always cut the little eyes and bits out of pototoes before cooking and put the bits in the compost bin but because o.h. lets it get too full and can't turn the compost, I end up with spuds growing in any container I use compost in, have had several boilings in the past just by letting them grow and this year I can see even more plants so more free taters!

Wish I was nearer, you could have a host of plants from this garden, so many ornamental grasses that have seeded themselves everywhere, and lots of other bits, oh and millions of little purple or pink violas/violets - so pretty but taking over every pot and tub.

You could be right.I went to college back in late 80s [landscape gardening] and im amazed how techniques and ideas have changed.No one would have thought of all these "tropical"type plants would grow here.Ive got a great kiwi.Also all the extra insects[lily beetles unheard of except in very warm southern areas].Theres also a trend towards the "no dig "way of growing veg.All good fun though.

Thanks Teresa, but I thought I read somewhere that the flowers have to be nipped off. Mine are about 8 inches high, just leaves, and I've banked up the soil around them. (I started them off at home btw and replanted them on my allotment to-day.)

no,leave flowers on.just bank soil up to avoid them going green.I grew some through black plastic 2yrs ago.Just cut a cross in it and plant spud.Worked very well.

hiya wend, thanks, my tatties are about to bloom, me peas aka mushrooms are doing great, i was hoping they self seed i can't think if I've ever seen them but most said the blue is gawjus, my lettuces sold well and cabbages my purple sprouting are doing good , cant wait jacket pot purple sprouting mushroompeas lurpak butter not home grown lol and some cheese also not home grown xx, i would like a cow but specky said one is enough i said bullocks xx

Well done on your successful day, Puss. Glad to hear your mystery plant is Morning Glory. It comes in various colours, but the electric blue one is the finest, I think. I have them in my garden and I LOVE them. They just self seed every year. I've been on my allotment all day - planted my tatties, sugar snap peas and runner beans. Now I'm totally k-nacked and am having a medicinal (ha ha) whisky n ginger to soothe my aching bones lol xxx

Aww Puss so glad you did well again, and well done the women with the retired greyhound trust. I know they do good work after having greyhounds myself. I often hate to admit it unless I can explain that I kept mine to old age.

This weekend well not a happy time OH used to walk a neighbours old yorkie and sadly he died with OH in attendance a few days ago. Today they brought us all of benji's toys, coats, leads and food round. Yesterday was my friends funeral back in the UK. no flowers but donations to the Westie rescue centre.

Tomorrow will be good OH has the day off .:-)

Hi Puss, started day at 6.30 watching I player Ashes to Ashes which I missed last night.

Feel very bad about the poor greyhound, The hen night I went on last night was to dog racing. I had never been before but on the program it had details of how to adopt retired dogs.

Spent the rest of the day on catch up, shopping the never ending ironing etc.
Did have some friends pop by who we hadnt seen for a while.

Ma-in-law and I are off round the local churchyard tomorrow to sort out her Grandparents plot which we recently found and is in need of a bit of a tidy up

Good result, Puss. I used to have a market stall for a living and I know how hard it can be to sell.

my charity stall again today another 27 pound sent of to the vicar, had a really good laugh with other fund raisers, one lady was doing it with a grey hound that had been abused and beaten called jenny she was so good and loved having cuddles so her money goes to grey hound rescue, im really getting out and about with the berevement group and support group its really full filling beats dancing on tables and falling off in the days gone by lol how as your day been xx
