Also.... thin them in the evening or when the air is as still as possible... if you have them in the ground, cover them straight over with fleece or something overnight... helps reduce the chance of carrot fly, it would seem, as they can smell the smell of disturbed carrots/parsnips etc for miles!!... I have mine in tubs, for that very reason. Carrot fly can't fly over about 2ft... so I have them in tubs raised up on housebricks, lolol!! I still use a fleece over them when I thin or dig up the crop, just for the night.... just in case.
