Dont want to sound thick or stupid here, But;

How can you find out the names of deceased children?

IE; On a few 1911 census' i have it states number of children living. Number of children that have died. (For one example Total living is 6 and total that have died is 5)

I have tried a Births search using mothers maiden name etc, but alot of the births are before the Mothers Maiden name was recorded on birth enrties.

Is there another way to find out, or are they lost for good?

I don't know where you are searching, but I have searched on Scotlandspeople and , trying to find out that very question... I asked for all childhood deaths (name) aged birth to 15 years.
I found so many.
Try that and see what happens.
Good luck.

Hi Daniel,
Dn't worry about the questions you ask on here, we were ALL new to this at some stage!

As for your search for children of a marriage.....it's all down to educated guesswork at first.

Going through the births (eg Freebmd or Ancestry), you can whittle down the possibilities certainly.......
Start your search at the year of the parents marriage, or even a year or so beforehand.
Area - provided they hadn't moved (far) between census returns, you're on a safe bet to think the children would have been born (and died) in that same area.
Also the trend was to stick with famly names.
When you find what you think is a 'possible' birth, have a look for it in deaths, where you will also see the child's age at death.

Searching the Parish register (Baptisms/Burials) is another option.
