At present, we have a rescue cat, called Tom.
Tom, was abandoned, and taken to SSPCA centre at Bothwell.

Before we adopted Tom, we have had another 4 cats, over a number of years.

Our last cat was called Leo. We said , after he passed,, he would not be replaced.

After a time, we missed a cat about the house.

Then came Tom.Not a planned addition, but here he is!

Now you're talking! I'm a cat person too.

No matter how grumpy, uppity, snotty, sulky and generally moody they can be, they are excellent comanions, boss of their own sleeping areas, independent and not subservient. But best of all, they are far from stupid.

My OH is diabetic, and sometimes has a few problems in the evenings. My cat Muppet (because thats what he is most of the time lol), knows it before I do, and I'm pretty good at spotting subtle changes in his eyes or attention, he will jump on his chest and dig his claws in, just enough to rouse him out of it.

Hows that for clever?

Other than that he's a lazy, good for nothing, grumpy old man...the cat that is LOL

Really you two? I'd never have guessed! LOL

We actually came by Tom, via our daughter.

She adopted him, when she was "between jobs".

She then found a full time job, meaning Tom was left alone for a long time each day.

We all agreed. it best, we ,as cat lovers, take Tom to live with us. ( No way he was going back to cat and dog home)

PS. Said Tom, is lying at bottom of bed, purring at me!

Cats - as Teresa has said can be uppity, snotty, sulky and generally moody, but they don't need exercising!!!!!
My lot are also always after 'new' food- I just point out they haven't eaten what's down, and, gradually, that will disappear. They won't starve - there's always dry food down. I just like to have a wee bit of power over them!
They keep you 'down to earth' - you can't be snobby when your decor (particularly sofa) has been turned into 'shabby chic' by the darlings.
Invite someone back - and you can guarantee to find either a pile of vomit, dead mouse, plucked bird, frog (usually alive) etc somewhere on the premises!!

maggie i used to work for the CPL omg they were all my friends you name it mice birds always a present i was a nervous wreck, i cant drive so my ex oh who hated cats, had to drive me and 20 kittens accross town they got out of the box and were crawling all over him, thank gawd it wernt the ferral ones. i have lap dogs and they are best for me and specky xx

I agree with Maggie, especially the variety of presents left around the place. Like the one I found behind the sofa one day when my grandaughters were round. Littlest one dropped a toy behind the sofa, and as our living room is really small, that mean the whole sofa had to be moved so we could get to it.

What did I find? A letter which had somehow managed to find its way underneath, and which said cat had used as a loo. How I never smelt it I'll never know, but red faces all round LOL.

Teresa - at least the cat had the decency to do it on a bit of paper and not the carpet!!!

I like dogs but I'm definatley a cat person. We always had a cat when I was a child, hubby is not a cat person, but when his sister went to live in Texas, she didn't want to split her 2 cats up and hubby surprised us all by saying we would have them. We hVe now had them 8 years and he loves them. Scully the female will let the girls do anything with her, but Claude is mine. I was dreading coming home from hospital because as soon as I put my legs up on the sofa of a nightime both of them come and jump up and lie on me and I thought that they would try and do the same, but it as if they know that Mummy has a poorly tummy because they come and sit beside my legs with their paws resting on my knees. I wouldn't like to imagine what life would be like without them.

Well, I love dogs.... but for different reasons to loving cats... for me, a perfect home has both, lol

I have 5... cats, that is... and they are all real characters... I can't imagine being without any of them, although I know that my beautiful Polgara does not have more than a few months left to her, and to us. She is almost 19, Rosy is 14, Jessie is about 3 and the boys will be three in July...... they are GR Kittens, lol... some older members will remember that thread, when Puss' La La went into labour... what a night that was!!

Helen and TW, when I came out of hospital after each session of chemo, two of mine, Jethro and Pol, would take it in turns to sit close to me.... or lay close to me if I was in bed. And they warned my hubby each time when my temperature was up, indicating an infection. They do have an extra sense, don't they... mind, my dogs did too, I think it is an animal thing, myself.

I'm a cat person too. Had one most of my life.
i like dogs too, just never had a lot to do with them.

I think I recall your kittens' arrival. Didn't think it was 3 years, but I recall it was round the time that I lost Leo.

At one time I had 3 cats at once, but 5. You are either very brave, or very...relaxed ( was going to say mad, but think all of us cat lovers are a dit mad).

How are you keeping, incidentally?

Gail, yes, three years this July.... it is 18 months and more since I was diagnosed, the time has gone so quickly! (October 2008)

I think I must be nuts... we had 3 when we moved here, then got Hermie and Jethro from Puss because hubby felt guilty cos he'd said no to a puppy, so he suggested a kitten and I came back with 2, and then Belle died a couple of months before I was taken ill, just after the boys' first birthdays..... then Jessie moved in on us from next door but two... we realised she had a den in the house... we knew she was coming in the catflap.... and we found her bonfire night.... she'd been missing a couple of weeks by then it would seem. Not that they looked very hard for her, to be honest. She has 3 legs but is as feisty as they come with strange cats.... and Hermie.. she has him sussed as the Wuzz... Pol still gives her a swipe if she gets too close, Jethro wants to play all the time (imagine a feline puppy, and that is Jethro) Rosy belts her one, once in a while. But she is an absolute dream with the children, they can do what they will to her... and she never ever complains. We have to be on guard to make sure they don't hurt her to be honest, she is so good with them.

I am fine now, doing very well indeed, and generally bucking the system, lolol Still get *hiccups* now and again, but hey ho... I'm still around to get them which is the important thing.

I just love mucking up their statistics, lol ;¬))

Somerset Girl, have you tried gradual introduction? Sometimes pet allergies happen because children haven't been exposed to furry pets as babies, so their immune system doesn't learn to *ok* them. I am certain that having my cats has helped my immune system build back up so strongly, and there was some talk at first of me having to put them into a cattery for 6 months, but no way!!

It can be as small a difference as type of cat that causes allergies. Shorthair is usually the best. We had two dogs, one a Dalmation, the other an old English miniature. The Dalmation always brought my son up in a rash if she licked him, but the other was fine. We have two and a half cats at the moment. Our old 18yrold Hamish, who staggers on from day to day enjoying himself in his own way, a bit senile and needs to be reminded what he is doing some times. Lizzie, our rescue cat who is longhaired and about 9yrs. Last but not least and the hungriest, is the black and white stray that comes for at least two meals a day and a dish of milk and water, which is what Hamish has. Milk being too strong for them.
