A horse is great, but cant be a house companion. We had both dogs and cats always, but when our last two dogs went, we decided that as I could no longer walk them when OH was at work, we would not have another. we have got A sponsored dog with Dogs Trust. We loved German shepherds, such handsome dogs and so protective. Ours knew I was ill before I did!

Dogs win every time with me. At one stage we had 4 but had the garden to cope with it. Have had all sizes from Rottie to Yorkie.

However, retirement, smaller house and OH with health probs means it's not really practical nor fair on a dog to be stuck with us!

But we do so miss them.

i can't remember a time when i didn't have a dog...and can't imagine a time in the future when i won't have one.. they are so much more faithful than human friends and love you unconditionally

We have a 5-month old puppy - he can be a 'monster' but is so gorgeous. He's growing so fast - what happened to that cuddly little bundle we brought home a few short weeks ago!!

Julia, I had a German Shepherd and a Labrador..... and they were brought up with cats, we never had a problem... but Pol is now so frail and elderly, with not much time left, that we don't want to disrupt her much... the boys and Jessie would manage just fine, I am sure... Jethro wouldn't have any problem, Hermie is a wuzz but would soon learn, and Jess is very feisty so would soon put a dog in it's place... and then Rosy, well, she was fine with Bonny and Sadie (dogs) but is now 14 so might not take to another.

Puss.... we have decided when we get another it will almost certanly be a German Shepherd. Hubby isn't keen on small dogs.... he isn't afraid of them at all, but still bears the scars from small dogs. He won't have one while we have cats or while we have children in and out... and though he is quiet, when he makes a decision, he is virtually immoveable. He has said when he retires, and if one or both of us is able to exercise and look after properly, then we will go for it.

Besides which.... I have the boys and Pol always thinking they are lapdogs, lolol!!

Morning All - We have been either ALL dogs, or ALL cats for years.
We even had a period when we had both. Whenever a newcomer came into the fold, no matter which kind, I always used to tell them '" Now these where here before you, and it is their home, so it is up to you to join in. No nonsense, or you gone.". And then to the 'residents' "Now make this new one welcome. Don't forget, you were a newcomer once." And it did work. Cats and dogs lived together, no problem.LOL

I love dogs, and would give my eye teeth for one... hubby is putting his foot down still, and I can't say I blame him, as I first felt ready for another when it was clear I was unable to walk one far... in hindsight, he was absolutely right.

Now we have a garden which is not suitable for a dog to play or *go* in... all flower beds, veg plots and gravel.... not really, and the decent walks are a bit far away to walk to, for it to have a really good run around.... and I am not always able to drive, even though I am so much better. I couldn't cope with a puppy, but the cats wouldn't cope with an older dog...

I have 5 cats, one who will almost certainly be going over the Rainbow sooner rather than later...

I did mention chickens a couple of days ago and got *the look* from Lord Hunter Gatherer... guess that's a no then.

My girls have been gone 7 and 8 years now, and I still miss them so much.

yikes i took my babies across a field with horses in , just thought they would ignore me, half way across the field ned wants to come and see my babes but ned started nudging my shoulder , my dogs were going spare trying to hide and tying me up with their leads, ned was getting naggiar lol so i untangled my self breathless as i was in full swing of an asthma attack and my eyes had swollen due to being allergic , i managed to untangle the dogs, i normally can only walk at a slow pace but i moved , struggled got home and collapsed on the sofa wmsl scary horses.

Hmmmmmmm Sue!!!!!!

They go out all on their own when the fancy takes them, come back when they feel like it, bring you totally inappropriate presents, let you know in no uncertain terms when they need something, and sleep when they don't.

Maybe I'm describing a cat - but then again, maybe not!

I'm sorry, Night watchman, horses can chase you - and they have hard hooves!!!! they can also be evil and have big teeth - far too big to be that intelligent/stroppy/lairy!!!

I had to have my 18yr old rescue dog put to sleep a yr ago, his quality of life had gone and it would have been cruel /selfish to have kept him.
He was dad's initially but at aged 90 he couldn't walk him any more so he came to live with us.
I slept on the sofa for 2 nights beside him to comfort him, he was obviously suffering, but a decision hard tho it may be had to be made. He was a wonderful companion, wary of men initially, he must have been abused by a man and thrown out on the streets.
He was marvellous with children , mine were little at the time we had him.
I'm trying to persuade hubby to have another.
When I was a child up to 20 we had 3 dogs and was never without one.
So I'm going to work on hubby for another....Wish me luck !
Tho I just may take the decision myself !!!!

Well my little Sweaty Betty was not trustworthy today.Took her to my mums and she peed all over her carpet lol.Annie

Hi Gail, I like cats too... we've kept both (lots of pets) , I suppose though my mum was more the 'cat person' than me...
I have to say cats are more inclined to make me sneeze lol, and I'm not a great one for sitting still with a cat curled up on my knee, so I wouldn't have a small 'lap dog' either...

Dogs are great,

they chew your slippers,,want to woo every avaliable bitch in sight,will even bite the postmans fingers off,,,,,,,,, given the chance take off with the joint,,,,.attack other dogs,rip your newspaper and bills to bits.....and deface your carpets,,,,,,but their loyality is second to none,}}}}}}

I like dogs, too......But have to say, that I prefer cats.

Can I ask another question?

Why do certain peeps say that they do not like cats? I do not recall anyone /group, saying that they do not like dogs!

Would love to have an answer !

You should go ride a horse Rose! There is nothing like the freedom one feels in the middle of a gallop, canter or a trot!
