Please tell me if you are still able to hold the cursor over a persons name and see their membership number on the bottom of the screen.

I have had a computer upgrade and there are a few things which are just not the same. Inexpertly fiddling with the settings trying to retrieve/correct some which have changed.

Botheration. I used to be able to see these numbers and now I can not. Thank you for your replies.

Now I need to find out why. I hate new technology!!!

And hello IIB!!

What a Wally!!!

Nothing wrong except the empty space between the ears.

Duh!!!

View Toolbars select status bar.

All fixed

Now I have to return all my settings to where they should be and go sit in the corner and ponder my stupidity for at least five minutes!!!

Don't worry, Aunty Sherlock, I ponder my stupidity quite regularly!

Thanks for that, Aunty S. I had wondered why I could no longer do it either. I have now gone to tools-toolbar (which had disappeared ages ago)-status. Not that I make a habit of looking to see members numbers.

Huia.

Can I add to this interesting forum?

I never knew that you could see a membership number by hovering over a name! Why do you need to know a person's mem.no?

Just curious , as it doesn't work for me.

It it is of real benefit, then, hopfully, some kind person, will talk me through how to go about things.

Thanks all

Morning Gail, it is useful to be able to see the numbers for a variety of reasons :)

Especially on the TTF/ records you find many do not have a distinctive board name....you might for example find two or more Kevins...if you have helped one of these in the past with a look up and they post a second query..it is often helpful to use advanced search to find the details, if you have their number you can distinguish between them .

In messages you often get these from someone whose 'community name' is different...you can then check to see who it is lol.

and, you can use the numbers to see if someone you have 'problems' with has appeared under a different name but with the same old bad attitude ;)

Gail, on my computer I go to Tools (near the top) and click on it. It gives a drop down menu. I then click on toolbar and from there status bar. You will then find a new bar near the bottom of the screen and if you hover your cursor over a name, e.g. AuntySherlock a message comes up, with her number at the end (hers begins with 9 and ends in 4, just to see if you can see it).

Thank you Huia.

I've got there, eventually. I clicked on Tools, and couldn't find tool bar. I clicked on View, and there it was!

I now know what peeps have been talking about, as being able to see membership numbers, does crop up from time to time.

Cheers

Hi Everyone, Please excuse my rudeness in not being here to answer questions about my thread. I have had a family day today and a few other things that needed doing.

OK. Why do I need to see the membership numbers. I'm keeping a log book on all your behaviours and if I see you being wicked I will write down your number.....errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...................!!!!

Ducks, runs and hides. Puff, puff. Goodness I am out of practice.

No actually it is exactly as Rambling Rose says. To identify GR members with the same name. Very often I might have someone in my threads or my contacts list. Someone else will post a query or message and I often will check to see if it is the same person.

I also find it handy to look at a persons number when I am replying to a query. I know this rule does not always work because not all members use the boards straight away. However if the number is high it is fairly usual that the person is new to the boards.

And as for the split personalities well it is sometimes good to know to whom you are speaking, just so you don't put your foot in your mouth.

I am certain I have had this same conversation before on the boards. In this case I did not intend to raise a debate on the issue. As I said I noticed the function had disappeared after my computer upgrade and wondered if GR had removed it in one of their "maintenance sessions".

If I remember correctly if you click on someone's name to send them a pm, their membership number should appear at the end of the address at the top of the screen.

Well I never knew that one. Thanks. Learn something every day around this place.

AuntySherlock, the suggestion by SRS, doesn't work for me. So I just use the 'hover over the name' method. Perhaps it is different for different people.
