I am a relative new comer to this geneology thing and to this site. I have bought $10 worth of credits, I was hoping I could look at original census forms with them, if not what is the extra benefit in me buying them please? I am not having any luck with anything and only got a week to use them.

Maybe you are putting too much info in so its not finding anything on it.
I dont know how the genes search engine works as never used it ,genes dont in fact hold any records thy direct you to another site.
I started my searches by taking the free 14 day trail on Ancestry and foond loads that prompted me take subs ,never looked back. Still have Ancestry subs although now I am at parish records for most of my sides of the tree, What has been great is the London Parish records on Ancestry where i have found lots of info including a child that i never knew existed as born and died between two census.s

Hi Cherylin, who are you looking for and when?

Cherylin I also started off buying credits, but if you are seriously looking into family history, then you will probably be doing it for some while as these things can take time. I then took out a subscription which was far better value for money. As Shirley says, Ancestry is a good site for this.
Good luck with your research.

Shirley,
You say you are on Parish Record sites, I need to be doing this now, do you recommend any in particular. My areas would be Essex, Herts, and Wiltshire .

hi Susan not on parish records sites .For Essex I have visited several times the Records Office at Chelmsford ,
Found other info on Family Search site but you need to make sure its Parish record entries not submitted records as these are members trees uplifted to the site and therefore you dont know how accurate they are or verified .personally i like confirmation of facts through records before i accept . Ancestry has lots of london parish records now that have been uplifted from the records found at the London Metropolitan Archives .I have also visited there in the past. Living in Kent I belong to the local Family history society and they regularly go to Kew . we used to go to the LRO at islington till it transferred lots to Kew

The family Search site too has Pilot records that may hold info for the ares you want for instance i did find a baptism of 1833 in South Shields

Although I'm a fan of Ancestry, FindMyPast also is advertising a 14 day free trial so worth considering.

Another site for transcribed parish records, is

www.freereg.org.uk

By no means are all parishes records transcribed, but it is an ongoing project and worth checking back on. Although the IGI (Familysearch) is probably more extensive, Freereg will include any notes that the priest left on the register and will note witnesses of marriages which can give more leads.

Freecen.org.uk are also transcribing census records.

The above 3 sites (Familysearch, Freereg, Freecen) are free to search and use. And don't forget Freebmd!

FreReg is very good for Norfolk parish registers which have almost non-existent cover on the IGI, reputedly because the bishop refused to let the LDS have copies.
