If you own shares in a company which trades on the Stock Exchange, what is the procedure for selling those shares.

Keep it simple please. I don't think the sale of our share portfolio will have a detrimental effect on the economy.

No experience Sherlock but if you google 'Selling shares' it seems that you can sell them on line or by post. There are various sites, some offering a flat fee.

I imagine though that you could contact the company concerned and they might buy them from you or tell you how to go about it?

You will need to open an account with a stockbroker. I use Saga Share Direct.

It isn't as daunting as it sounds - just Google Selling Shares.

Thank you for that information. Did a google search and found some ASX information. It might as well be in Chinese all the sense it made. Will have another go.

The Bank you have an account with probably has a Stockbroker Service, but you'd need to compare fees etc.

You can also sell them through your bank, well, I've done it that way once, but we usually use a stockbroker.

Thanks you lot. I have googled the topic and found enough info to stop OH asking me stupid questions.

I did ask at the bank and the teller sort of went glassy eyed and mumbled something about not knowing much about it.

OH is not fond of them and has been threatening to get rid of them for a while now. I am usually a let's hang onto them and see what happens type person. And yes I know the answer. Each year at tax time I have to spend half an hour looking for the paperwork so I can enter the details into the tax return and keep the government happy .

Think OH probably has the right idea.

A few years ago hubby received some shares in HIS name for OUR JOINT building society account. I wanted to sell them as they seemed a very good price but hubby wanted to hold on to them for the yearly returns. After a few years of fairly good returns they now don't make anything and, even worse, they are worth the same in hundreds that they were worth in thousands at the time :((

Yes the sale of these are not going to have me dripping in diamonds. One lot are holding their value and the others well I think we will have to pay to get rid of them.

So perhaps an expensive box of chocolates, or two or three.
