Island, and Bob, I second that. I have a case in the family where the wife died leaving 8 children. Hubby 'married' her sister, and had a child of their own. A marriage has never been found, but I think the dead sister act would have been responsible for this. However, next census has 'second' wife, as wife, and 'mother to several of the children who are still at home. Hubby was buried with his first wife.

One of my grt grt Uncles married a woman 20 years his senior, so *he* was the Toy Boy! No known children, and they messed with their ages from census to census to (presumably) make the age gap smaller. They only came clean when their deaths were registered. Suppose the gossip didn't bother them at that point!

My gt gt grandmothers 2nd marriage was to a man 15 yrs her junior. I think it might have been a marriage of convenience for one or both of them. Her first husband died of consumption leaving her with a small daughter. He probably needed a housekeeper. All guesswork of course. She didnt have any more children though.

5 or 8 years difference is not a lot Kevin, as was said a new wife 15 or 20 years younger, taking on a blokes family is possible.
you may find that they kept it in the family sometimes like the bloke marrying (or maybe NOT marrying )his dead wifes sister, maybe......

In mine, its quite often the other way round, bloke has children, wife dies ( often in giving birth to the umpteenth child) and by next census he has remarried a girl 20 odd years his junior
