Terence Report 11 May 2010 14:59

I am trying to find Edith Nuttall, I know she was living at 16 Clifford Street, Barnoldswick. Yorks. at the beginning of 1943. She then moved to Ross Road, South Norwood, Croydon. in the same year. She gave birth to a son she called Terence Nuttall, who was adopted. Edith gave her occupation as a domestic servant. I would be grateful if anyone knows of her.
Thankyou.

Have you a birth year / date for Edith..?
Did she have a middle name?

Hi Gwyn,

We think she was born about 1923, Edith Nuttall was her maiden name, unfortunately she did not have a middle name which has made it rather difficult. Edith came to 'The Retreat' in South Norwood. where she gave birth to Terence in September 1943.

With that possible birth year she wouldn't feature on electoral lists until after the war then.....

Have you checked the electoral lists for Clifford Street before and after the war, in the hope that a relative might also be there.?

If you find Edith there it would at least give a clue to a possible area for marriage..... There seem to be rather alot!

Hi Terence - just want to check you don't have this request on another board here as well - Chat is not the usual place for family history requests. ;)

I've done a little looking around - and amazingly, what I suspected is confirmed by a post on this board about *one* Edith Nuttall, who seems to be yours.

My theory was:

Name: Edith Nuttall
Mother's Maiden Surname: Mcconville
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1924
Registration district: Haslingden
Registration county: Lancashire
Volume Number: 3e
Page Number: 156

(The birth is questionable, it's just that the date of birth matches the date in the death record below.)

Name: Edith Nuttall
Spouse: James J Sugrue
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1945
Registration district: Hampstead
Registration county (inferred): Middlesex
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 1574

Name: Edith Sugrue
Birth Date: 26 Jan 1924
Death Registration Month/Year: Sep 1997
Age at death (estimated): 73
Registration district: Camden
Inferred County: London
Register number: B46A
District and Subdistrict: 2501B
Entry number: 263

and the post I found was this:

My mother Edith Nuttall (died 1997) was born in Bacup or Barnoldswick in 1924. She had 3 siblings, Wilfred, Winifred, and Mary. I think her mothers name was Alice but I am not sure (maiden name Mc Conville). She died aged 26 in 1926 leaving my mother to be brought up by Pheobe Game. I know very little about her side of the family other than her father ran a slipper factory (I think his name was John)

Looks like my birth was right -- all of these births have mother's surname McConville -- I'd been a little excited and neglected to notice that bit in the 2004 post by Stephen. ;)

Stephen's post is old and he may not be reachable through GR --I neglected to give you the thread address:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=569658

He is on the electoral roll at present. If you go to Whirley's thread:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1190509

you can send her a *private message* (click on her name) asking her to look up the address/telephone details. Obviously making contact will be a bit of a delicate matter and that's something I wouldn't give advice about.

At this point this discussion seems a little inappropriate on the open boards, since it's about the family of a living GR member in particular. I'll wait to hear that you've seen this info and then delete the details from my posts.

Edit:

The births after 1928 must belong to this couple:

Marriages Jun 1929

MCCONVILLE Winifred Nuttall Haslingden 8e 252
Nuttall Thomas McConville Haslingden 8e 252

Stephen may have reregistered under Steve. If you look for Stephen Sugrues there's a Steve with a later membership number who has him in his tree.

I've PMed Richard but the message has not been opened yet. I'd prefer not to discuss the living people. ;) You could send Richard a message too Rose!

Richard has replied.

Richard, please review the information again.

The mention of Barnoldwick and the sequence of events -- do you really think there can be a question?

You say you need to connect the registered address in 1943 to the lady.

I think what you need to do is find a way of contacting the Sugrue family members, which would seem the likeliest way of making that connection. You didn't indicate that you think that is worth doing. Oh well.

Have sent a PM to Richard with all of Stephen's siblings. Hopefully, he can make contact with someone.
