Just seen on T.V. a story about a young Student who died in America while on a student visa about two years ago.
Parents of Keith are petitioning the Irish Government and the Records Office in Roscommon to have Irish people that die in foreign countries while on holidays registered in Ireland as they are not registered in country of death, which means that nobody will ever be able to find a death cert for them.
Coroner in America told family where to go to register death, but when they went they were told that they could not as he was not resident in America.
Last year 244 Irish people died in foreign countries who have no Death cert. Only Irish people allowed Irish death certs who die on foreign lands are Gardai(Police) Soldiers and people who die in transit on Irish/Foreign Aircraft, or Irish/Foreign Airplanes.

Can I ask does this only apply to Irish Nationals, or does it apply to Scots,English and Welsh too? Does this mean if you pass away on hols abroad you cannot register a death?

I didn't know about this either. It must cause all ends of problems. I suppose that the family must have some sort of death certificate, i.e. some piece of paper which states the cause of death. But of course that isn't available anywhere for everyone to see.
I wonder if this is the reason some people have a brick wall with a disappearing relation?

Just to make life more difficult for us all.
I cannot even imagine the worry of being a relative of someone who has died while on holiday, yet it happens more often than we can imagine.

My husband has Irish rellies, from Roscommon, too. Does this mean that if Uncle ----- (who I adore) dies on one of his regular visits to us that he won't be registered anywhere! I can't believe it! Sounds really odd. Can anyone enlighten us?

LanarkshireLassie it only applies to people from Republic of Ireland since 2004.
In their so called wisdom the Irish Government brought in a new law that only Gardai(Police)Soldiers and people that die in transit on Planes Irish/Forgien or Ships will get a death cert.
I believe that if people from U.K. died on holidays get a Counselor (sp.?) death cert from the country of death.
We don,t.
Will try and find out more and hopefully update you on it.
