WHAT IS THE LOGIC IN THIS-AN APOLOGY

Over the years, I have bought many metres of furnishing fabric from D*n E*m. A few years ago, when purchasing the same, I asked the person serving me, if they would cut a length off the metres I had had cut, so that it would be easier for me to handle when I got it home to sew. They told me, that they were not supposed to do that, but would.
I was in there over the weekend buying some oil-cloth, and I asked the same question. I was told they could only cut it at metre lengths, so had mine cut at 2 metre.
Now, I cannot see the logic in that, at all. I have tried to get my head around this, and cannot come up with an answer. Has anybody got any ideas.
Many Thanks

I suppose, if you get the measurements wrong, and they've cut it, you can take it back and complain!

They always cut slightly over the requested length and this can add up over time.

I ask for one metre, then when it's been cut I ask for another metre etc.

Hi Julia,Jobsworth comes to mind.

Why don't you tell them that it is for two different people?

Julia
That's where small shops come into their own.

I bought net for the caravan windows and the shop assistant cut each one to the size I needed...some really narrow, some for a wide picture window.

Good Morning All. Ladies, I must apologise for the lateness in my reply to your contributions to this thread, which I thank you for very much
This time of year has to be my busiest, preparing for the new gardening season. We have gardens, greenhouse and an allotment, which OH looks after, but it is down to me for all his plants. So, as I have just come in from the greenhouse, I thought I would put this up, whilst having a much needed cuppa.
I think Annina is probably right, and that it is abit of the old 'Jobsworth' syndrome.
Gwyn, you are right about shopping at the little local shop. But, we no longer have a local darapers/haberdashers, in the town. I always used to fetch my net cutains from there. It is the same with the ironmongers in the town. After over 100 years of business, they had to close because of a *&*, down the road.
Now, back to my old cloth. I asked for a piece measuring 3 1/2 mts. After the lad had cut it off, I asked if he would cut a piece off at 74 inchs, off my length, because it was such a large piece to handle at home. This I wanted for a table cloth for my patio table, having 'abused' the table top over the years with paint pots, despite putting newspaper down. The remainder was to make four cushion covers for the chairs. So, I am left with a piece for the cushon covers, that is 5" short of what I had calculated. What really surprised me was that I was told they could only cut peoples lenghts of fabric off at 1 mtr intervals.Somehow, this doesn't make sense to me.
Well, this afternoon, hopefully, when the weather man has forecasted rain, I will have to come back indoors and work. So, I will know when I start to cut off for the cushion covers, if it will work.
Many thanks again for you answers, and have a nice day.
