Can they be trained to walk properly on the lead or is it natural for them to be choking? LOL
stikes me many owners seem to think because they're small, and can easily be 'controlled' ie pulled, that they don't need to be trained, or taught any manners!

If you stick a strip of velcro on them and another strip of velcro on the wall you can throw them at the wall and they will stay stuck there.

A friend of mine has got a chihuahua x English toy terrier , funny little thing he is , I didn't think I would take to him at all but as time has gone by I have been around him enough to see his character and think he really is as much a dog as any bigger canine .
Maggie , the choking you mention , apparently very small dogs should be on a harness ( not a collar and lead ) as it damages their windpipe ( hence the choking ) .

lol, men will always say how they would never be seen with one, mine is curled up asleep on specky as we talk, i was a bit apprehensive when he brought him home, because i have the older toy dogs i was thinking how stress full it would be always worrying weather the older ones would pick on him, dinky (chihuahua) terrorises them, he swings on there ears and tail, just walks past them and pniches there chews , he in fact is what is what he is a actual mini dog as in a rotti or staffie, he is fearless, his nickname is piranha , he leads you in thinking your playing as he nibbles your finger then goes straight in for the chomp ouch lol xx

I used to work with somebody who bred and showed them but, and I hated this, she kept them in large dog cages in rows in a spare bedroom. I have to say they seemed happy but she worked full time and it didn't seem natural. She was a dog judge too at shows.

Not a dog I particularly like but I think it is different when they are yours and I am sure they all have their own characteristics, we used to have a toy crossed with miniature poodle, she was small and a lot of people don't like them either, I suppose they are not much of a status symbol where big is beautiful.

Ann i really agree regarding them being in cages it makes my blood boil, there is no need , yet people will still buy from a "breeder", rather than a pup from a good loving home, i know not all breeders are bad, but why in a cage?, a breeder i know off turned her garage into a dog home where the dogs go out and in when they need to go to the loo and exercise , the boys go into a separate part as of the consequences xx

Anyone ever watch Cesar Milan? He sorts more problems with chihuahas and other toy breeds than anything else!

Cesar Milan is fantastic.
Amazing how many of the dogs he sees have 'problems' because of under/no exercise.
I think, in Britain we get or don't get a dog because of the exercise issue.

Yes, he is incredible - I met him at Glasgow a month or so ago after his show. As you say, lack of exercise is a major problem and he maintains, and I agree, that 99% of problem dogs have the owners to blame.

He has a fantastic pack, with all breeds and sizes in it, from chihuahas to rottweilers. It's marvellous to see how they react with each other.

His tactics work as well!
I was walking to the bus stop when 2 loose Jack Russels (I could hear the family screeching at them) ran up to me. One was trying to bite my heels, the other ran in front of me, turned to face me and was snarling & barking.
I pulled my shoulders up - did the 'strong & assertive' bit, stopped, immediately turned - which amazed the dog at my heels, clicked my fingers, pointed down and sharply went psshh. He sat down.
I turned round and the one in front of me stopped barking and skulked!!
I could still hear the owners shrieking.
The dogs didn't go back to them, but hung around me at a distance, slightly cowering, but silent, until the owners came & picked them up!
It was a bit scary, I had to maintain my stance - and the owners gave me a strange look!

At the start of his show, he describes how he went to a house in California where a family owned a dog of some description, can't remember the breed. The problem was that they told him that the dogs would always growl at them when it was eating. When he went to see them, the dog was sitting at the table eating and the family had to sit elsewhere! Every time they tried to get to the table, the dog growled at them.

It simply hadn't occured to them to feed the dog elsewhere - they wanted it to be part of the family and sit with them when they ate. Only in America, eh.

lol Eldrick i had a cat that did that only he didn't growl he sat at the table on a plumped up cushion, he also used to burgle people he would bring me a cooked chicken or a sausage he did a lot more but that's a different thread lol
maggie i would have pooped how scary, there are a few staffies round here they seem to want to eat my babies thing is marley toy poodle wants to let them I've changed my walking route so many timesxx
