Haven't heard one yet, although we live close to woodland and often hear them around this time.
Will listen out for one this weekend, and hopefully hear one soon.

I've not ever seen or heard a Nightjar .
I really ought to brush up on my bird recognision ( usually to busy looking at the ground spotting wild flowers ) .

There is a large tidal mud flat in my area which can attract the rare migrant from time to time . You always know when something special is about as " Twitchers " appear in vast numbers , complete with all their trappings......lol

Yes, their call is territorial and it's the male advertising for a mate. I seldom hear it after the middle of June.

They really are an unpleasant bird, lol - I wonder if they would be so well loved if their call was different? I like them, though, I must admit.

My favourite is the nightjar that nests on a moor near to us. Haven't heard him this year yet, but it's still a little bit early.

Do they only make their call when they are looking for a mate ? It is , in my mind , a Spring sound . Can't recall ever hearing one in the middle of the summer time.

It must be wonderful to have so much of nature around you to admire . Living on a housing estate I have to do my observations of the wonders of nature whilst out on dog walks ( which cuts down the opportunities as they can be noisy beggars at times ...lol ).

Heard the first one here today as well, although there was one a week ago not far away. It was the 26th April last year when I heard it, so just a few days late.

Before long, there will be several - I hope!

Our first blackbirds fledged yesterday - 3 of them sitting on the fence now with the parents going like mad to bring them food. There's a pied wagtail in the ivy and a robin in a pile of logs behind the shed, a wren not far away and the swallows are building already.

I've been able to work outside for the past few days without a heavy coat on - summer is here! Having said that, there's still snow on the hills to the north.....

Sad to know you have never heard one Joan.........I wonder why they don't inhabit your area ? I guess I have had the joy of hearing one most years as I live in Norfolk and one of the nests they like to lay their eggs in is the Reed Warbler..........Norfolk is the land of reeds.......lol

Keep your ears pricked Whirley and perhaps you'll hear one in the next few days ?

We're surrounded by woodland where we live and have, for years now, always heard the Cuckoo, as if it's like a safe haven here...I will be gutted if I dont hear one this year.............

I didn't hear it in my garden either Stray............I was out walking the dogs.

Apparently the Cuckoo is in decline , so maybe I have been very lucky to actually hear one at all : (

no not heard one, i dont get many birds in my garden they dont get on wiht the cat! lol x

We usually get one, Amanda, but not so far this year.... it is strange, but we have moved around a lot... but always seem to have had a cuckoo nearby. They drive me nuts at sill o'clock... they seem to be the first bird awake, don't they?

We normally hear one about this time of year Amanda, but we haven't so far...I love the sound of the Cuckoo............

I have a cuckoo clock in my dining room, but I'd prefer to hear the real thing............

It did spark me off into singing a round of " Summer is a coming in , loudly sing Cuckoo " ......I'm pleased I was in a wide open space so no one heard me...........lol
