Jo, why in Valletta on that date, are you just dropping in to Malta or what? I am all envious now. Do let me know what's planned, or did you do so and get the email back lol

Yes, G was fine in the Museum, so your GGGrandpa was on top of things lol

Hope you get to Bovington and have a great time. Do let me know.

love

...... (polite clearing of throat ... )

Liz and ladies,
I hesitate to mention that my GGGrandpa was, for some of his time (when his duties as a Norfolk Police Constable and gamekeeper would allow) a Warder in Norwich Castle when it was a prison.
I have his very heavy black wood (?ebony) truncheon always to the side of my front door - in case I ever need to repel boarders!
So, Liz, I trust that my lovely GGGrandpa looked after G in the Castle that night! Nothing to be frightened of, if my family ghosts were around!
And I have told N about the night-opening of museums (thanks to you) and, knowing N, he will want to go the the Bovington Tank Museum - and if he does - I am going too!!
We are very keen to see Herman the German, the well-documented wraith that has been frequently seen around their German Tiger tank.
Will let you know if we go.
Jo x
(and - we should be in Valletta for a day about 13th May!)

Hi Sis, glad this brought back a happy memory of Richard.

My lad and his friend didn't want Mum around, for which I was grateful as I wouldn't have wanted to be there on the hard floor either lol I remember they came back very tired as didn't have much sleep, they did a torchlight tour of the dungeons I think, I have always hated being down there and knowing what happened to the prisoners. Must have been hellish being stuck in a cold stone chamber underground with few clothes, little food and no light and no chance of getting out at all or for a long time. Ugh!

Years ago, my son did an overnight stay in our Castle Museum which is a wonderful Norman castle with dungeons and all, he was about 9 or 10 I think, they all slept on the floor of the keep and had a whale of a time.

I was imagining a spooky walk through the museums halls in the half dark, with all the exhibits looking at you!

Now this sounds interesting!

Museums at Night: May 14-16 2010
Taking time to visit museums, galleries and heritage sites the length and breadth of England is always a joy but, if it’s a really special experience you’re after, Museums at Night is for you. Taking place across the weekend of May 14-16 2010, this innovative look inside some of the most exciting venues in the land rouses organisers to put on inspired, unusual events, allowing inquisitive guests to take part in the sort of activities you might not normally expect in museums.

City attractions

Many of the major cities open multiple venues, so visitors can hop between the likes of The Great North Museum and the Discovery Museum on Newcastle’s “Late Nights”, or take in a silent disco at Tate Liverpool as part of Light Night before heading to the city’s age-old Bluecoat gallery for a night of risqué comedy.

You don’t have to live in a bustling metropolis, though, because wherever you head for there’s bound to be something intriguingly original going on, from atmospheric tours of lighthouses and Cornish tin mines, to late night nature walks around zoology spots and music and poetry at the London Canal Museum.

Family fun

The beauty of the weekend is that it opens up museums and galleries to all types of audiences – twilight trips across the cathedrals and Medieval buildings of Norwich, for example, are as likely to captivate young children through spooky stories as they are to give adults an entirely new perspective on these ancient landmarks. There are new twists on existing major shows, including opera singers and cinema installations let loose on the Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey show at the National Gallery, and fans of more specialist centres have some real treats in store.

Unique England

An interactive planetarium show saunters across the solar system at the Royal Observatory, the Cabinet War Rooms offer a night in Churchill’s secret World War 2 shelter and air raid sirens, giant searchlights and flight simulators recreate a gigantic battle over the Helicopter Museum in Weston-Super-Mare. Hugely evocative torchlight tours of some of the most historic locations in the country are always worth taking, with highlights this year including Roman-themed excursions around Bath, investigations of mythical folklore at Denny Abbey and tall tales from salty old seadogs at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Head to the Museums at Night website www.culture24.org.uk/museumsatnight for all the details and to plan your journey.
