Rambling Report 27 Apr 2010 21:21

I saw a baby blackbird yesterday just about at the point of flying, there are several pairs nesting in the hedge and in the garden at the weekend watch a wood pigeon collecting bits of grass and twigs for her nest...fascinating to see her reject certain pieces and take others, very choosy she was bless her.

I think one pigeon is nesting in the beech hedge as everytime I go out to hang the clothes she scrambles out and makes me jump lol.

Hi Stevie.

She was still working away at 7-30 thats at least 12 hr,what a waste if it fails.
There was a small looking male about this am so maybe this is their first time.
I'm becoming a bird watcher now lol

Maybe your blackbird is an inexperienced fledgling from last year Marion.
If I remember correctly the broods of 1st time parents often fail because of their lack of experience & the mistakes they'll make.

Hi Ann and Brenda.

So far its just been the female building it. i thought they both built it. either that or the female builds a nest before she finds a male.
Maybe he is conserving his energy for his 'big day' lol

My oh and I have a motorhome and went away for a few days just after easter. On the first morning as we were having b/fast a guy from the next pitch from us came over and said a bird had been going under our 'van'.When we looked under the bonnet a bird had made a nest in the engine.. we removed it 4 to 5 times a day for 4 days but back it came to build another.I t was such a shame to demolish her work but we couldnt drive with it there.poor bird must have thought she was going mad.she was obviously very determined.

We have a blackbird who built a nest in the ivy on our garage. She was busy 2 weeks ago bringing twigs etc.OH saw the male today coming out of there,so hope the eggs are still in it.Last year we had the same thing happen, but a magpie got in and destroyed it.hope that doesn't happen again, but it is a bit more hidden than last years was.

AnninGlos Report 27 Apr 2010 15:47

Sometimes blackbirds make a nest, then leave it before occupying it, as if trying out different sites. We had one this year in ivy on our fence, a cat walked along the fence one day, the birds abandoned the nest the next day, after OH had put wire up to stop the cat reaching the nest.

Well, I know it's not the same, but I dissuaded two pigeons from nesting in my jasmine....I simply jumped up and down and waved a red teatowel. It soon put them off:)) BC XX

I 'll put some miracle grow down next time I'm out help the plant if it can be helped lol

Just let nature take its course Marion. Lots of trees and shrubs are way behind in spring growth because of the long winter, hopefully your shrub will survive. As for the blackbird, she will have looked long and hard at the nesting site and decided it's right, so let her get on with it.

Hi Joan

I'll hope for the best. Its built about a foot from a nesting box that blue tits started to build in last year, then changed their mind for some reason. I thought they maybe spotted my cat on the window....a few feet away.

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 27 Apr 2010 14:28

Hi Tricia and Annie.

Just been watching it. Back and forward with beak full of grass twigs etc. I'm hoping it knows best and it will grow.
I wont touch it but I dont give out much hope for them :(( A cat could easily get into it by going a long the fence or up the trellis.
There are a few cats around including mine shes a house cat so will watch from the window.
