life is skittles and life is beer. I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring. Don't you? 'Course you do.
Especially when ... you have an election just around the corner. Ah, what some people in the world wouldn't give for an election ... people saddled with horrible, anti-democratic regimes ... like ... us Canadians.
So I'm tempting fate here. I've already quoted a song that got me banished once before, and I'm about to offer a discussion that also got deleted not long ago. That one was evidently a small mistake on the part of someone who must've spilled their tea on the delete button. Not likely to have happened if someone hadn't reported it first, I'd have thought. Anyhow.
www.politicalcompass.org
This time not to play with it on the board here, unless someone wants to, but for your assistance in picking a party for your current electoral frolic.
Do what it says there -- take the quiz yourself first before clicking around. This isn't some bogus "shortest political quiz in the world" (we'll leave them for the loonytarians who call you a commie if you think it's okay to pay taxes so you have things like schools). This will take a few minutes.
Don't argue with the questions. If no answer is perfect just pick the one that looks best. It's designed by genyooine experts to produce reasonably accurate results. No two answers are going to throw you into the BNP camp when you know you're a Green, or vice versa.
When you're done, you'll get a pretty chart showing your results (plus some numbers for your position on the chart that you can make a note of. You can copy the numbers and chart into an email and send it to yourself, if you like.)
*Then* click the link to look at the UK 2010 election info. Yeah, I know, you're all going to do that first anyway. Fine.
Remember which quarter of the chart you were in. See which parties are there with you. Prepare for a possible surprise. Look at where each party appears. Even if you were kind of expecting some of it, you might still be a bit surprised.
Enjoy!

Hi There Janey, Just saying to someone I had finished the shopping, have tea bubbling away in the slow cooker so now I can go do some research or pick a fight with someone on the boards.
And what is the first thread I spy. Why yours of course.
Now in keeping with the protocol of staying on task..... I am able, from personal experience, to thoroughly recommend the policical compass experience.
I have done the test, found which political party I am at most in tune with, and naturally voted against them in our recent State election. This action is called freedom of choice. It is also because the stupid party to which I have an affinity did not field a candidate for the seat in which I am obliged to vote.
Now hoping you Janey are still "here" I need you to answer the question I sent by means other than PM. It will not tax your brainpower or your research skills. It will save me from doing something which may waste my time.
Back on task again. Australians are heading for a federal election. It will be later this year. Anyone who doubts that statement should wonder why the electoral offices are gearing up for an election if there ain't going to be one!!! You all need to know which is your political party.
When you have finished the test. Notice Janey says do the test first. Just in case you can't read. Test first. Then if you are bothered suss out the FAQs and they will answer your questions. Remember test first.
Then if you are still bothered come back here and we can all discuss the matter.
Edit. You see I told you I would edit that bit before the population of the UK awakened from their slumbers.

Put my own slant on things as Canadians probably do not know what a blowfly is. ;)

Quite true.
The lifecycle of a blowfly is best left where it belongs. In Australia.
And it would only detract from the purpose of this thread; being to afford people the opportunity of discovering their political preferences.
Do you think blowflies and politicians have much in common?

That was fun! I am very pleased with my result - and pleasantly surprised. I think it's telling me that I am a much nicer person than I think I am!
Oh yes!

Last time we played with this stuff, most people were at least in the same quarter of the graph as Nelson (I don't think the Dalai Lama belongs there, so I'll ignore him).
So how did you feel when you saw where all your major parties were??
Check out the Canadian parties one too, and imagine how I feel about my current (Conservative) government -- the difference here being that there is a "mainstream" party in my quadrant so at least I can vote without barfing.
Barf. There's a word you don't hear much anymore. Like other bits of the lingo, it's been replaced by the less subtle 'puke' ...
I gather you're all quaking in your boots about the possibility of a minority government.
You know we have a minority government here at the moment, eh? We've had loads of them. They can actually work quite well. This one's the pits (the Conservatives in power are foul, and the other parties are all chicken), but one of our earlier ones is what got us 'national health', when the Liberal Party had to go along with my party and bring it in, if it wanted to stay in power.

The explanation is quite simple Janey. Australians frequently use the word "tea" to signify the evening meal. It is used instead of "dinner" which may be used as the midday meal. Supper is a snack you eat a few hours after tea or dinner. If you have had your tea (the meal) early.
Dinner used in the evening usually means an elaborate meal whilst tea means a lighter repast. Dinner and lunch are interchangeable for the midday meal. The whole thing depends on when and where you were born in Oz.
And yes we traditionally brew our tea in a pot, or in a cup with a tea bag or even in a billy when out camping. This is when the word "tea" denotes a beverage which I do not drink.

I don't drink the vile stuff either, but I knows ya doesn't boil it. ;)
Breakfast, lunch, supper (sometimes dinner). Life is easy.
But then we have dog's breakfast and dog's dinner, which is where things start getting complicated. ;)

Oh - and about those blowflies!

National Film Board of Canada animation -- good one. (Oscar nominated, but not one of the many the NFB has won.)
BLACK FLIES Album : This Land is Your Land (Wade Hemsworth) The Travellers
Black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
'Twas early in the spring when I decided to go for to work up in the woods in North Ontario The unemployment office said they'd send me through to the Little Abitibi with the survey crew
And the black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
Now then Black Toby was the captain of the crew he said, "I'm gonna tell ya boys what we're gonna do. The wanna build a power dam, we must find a way for to make the Little Ab flow around the other way." So we survey'd to the east survey'd to the west Couldn't make our mind up how to do it best Little Ab, Little Ab, what shall I do? I'm all but going crazy with the survey crew.
And the black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
Now the bull cook's name was Blind River Joe If it hadn'ta been for him we'da never pulled through He bound our bruises and he kidded us for fun He lathered us with bacon grease and balsam gum
And the black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
Twas black fly black fly everywhere Crawlin' in your whiskers and a-crawlin' in your hair They're swimmin' in the soup, swimmin' in the tea Oh the devil take the black fly and let me be
And the black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
At last the job was over; Black Toby said we're through With the Little Abitibi and the survey crew Twas a wonderful experience and this I know I'll never go again to North Ontario
Where the black fly, the little black fly always the black fly, no matter where you go I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones in North Ontario in North Ontario
