Went to a class today with my eldest who is struggling with her numeracy...the teacher organised for the parents to come in for an hour on a friday to help build their confidence and to help us to help them...as Maths...or numeracy as it is now is taught totally differently to the way we were taught it.

Well i have to say.

No wonder she's struggling

3 times I've tried to work out her sums like she's been taught..and three times i have got a different answer.

Anyone got any experience of this? Is it me or is it a real odd way of going about it?

TA's said it wasn't as barmy as it looks it's just because I've been taught differently but I'm not so sure ! xx

**totally useless at Maths myself...always have been btw..so there is a chance it's just me being thick x

No good asking me I add up and subtract THE OLD WAY...lmao you know, units, tens and hundreds, with whole numbers carried over.

My grand daughter does 'partitioning' - using numbers in a line, rounding them up then taking away the excess. Strikes me it's a bit like teaching them mental maths at the same time as written maths - when the two are totally different exercises.
She was excellent at maths in her infant school - now she's really struggling.
Her school also had to send instructions home to parents to explain - that says a lot!
I remember her 'Pop' (my ex) and me sitting down with her and trying to work it out. Both of us were totally confused - I used to be a LSA, have a degree, (got ti 10 years ago) part of which is Education. My ex teaches special needs adults - and has just got his Masters in maths!!!

Smacks of the experiment with teaching phonetic spelling.

I hit the maths wall and gave up trying to help my kids years ago as I was only making it worse for them........lol
It would be interesting to see , in say twenty years time , if I can answer correctly a few sums quicker than they can .
I don't like maths , never have but they are all reasonably good at it .

Why do the powers that be have to tinker with the education system or make radical changes.

Both my nephews were caught in the middle of English teaching when it became phonetic for two years. Their school soon reverted as the children were soooooo confused.

AND BAN CALCULATORS!!!!!

I was useless at maths, I hated it. LOL.

My OH is good, he can do any of it in his head, but he used to get into trouble at school because he couldn't do it on paper.

If a question was set, he'd work it out in his head and write down the correct answer, but couldn't for the life of him write how he worked it out. Still can't.

Me.....I have pages of scribbled 'workings out' before I arrive at some sort of answer. Gimme a calculator any day lol

Now I'm really embarassed. Daughter has just done the sums...and got them totally correct...I just checked using my system !!! I STILL can't get to the same total using her method LOLOLOL !

So much for me helping ...mind you seeing her mum struggle WILL most likely do her confidence the world of good...so it's worth it ...I think lol xx
