Hmmmm we owned two 16thc thatched cottages, you know how the thatcher signed his own work with a particular beastie, the same way as pargetters used one unique pattern in the overall design. We found a lot of odd things up chimneys and hidden within walls. Perhaps it's a charm from a house. |

lol, no, not at all Sue! It's from a site I am helping to research with a team of archaeologists. They haven't a clue and I brought it home to do some of my own research, but so far have failed - although I like Roses idea. |

Just my opinion, if it's 16c then I can't see it being a toy because the arms are defined as opposed to being close to the body. If it has a fixing then possibly a tradesmans advertising piece. |

Just away having a search, but the shape of the collar is certainly about right for Punchinello / Pulchinello 17th c Commedia del arte ( wishing I'd kept the theatre books i had tsk) |

I'm liking the punchinello idea.........I dont think it's a brooch or a charm, I wouldnt expect either to be made of lead, but it's still possible. It may, of course, be mor emodern than I think, but I definetely like the punchinello. |

yes, its got the look of a jester sort of thing. I'm not sure about it being a toy - its got a fixing on the rear. The context in which it was found would suggest 16th C...... |
