Could it have been a jesters scepter ? The stick would have eroded away or it may have just been broken.

Hopefully he is going to Nottingham Uni, he enjoys diving so is hoping to concentrate on Marine Archeology, although he has done a couple of digs I believe as part of his A level course.

You're so lucky mate having all that stuff on your doorstep so to speak.
Over here an ancient archeological dig is anything 19th century! lol

Although I have dug up a number of lovely chert cutting blades on my farm,
that could be anything from 100 to 40,000 years old!

We have around 150 artifacts to catalogue at the uni today, but this one is the only one we can't pin down. Will be back to the site tonight for a bit more explore and hopefully find some more things.

I too would be very interested as would my 18 year old grandson, he is off to uni in September all being well to study archeology.

If you dont have any joy Identifying the figure, then maybe you can send a photo of it to the British museum, either way I would be interested what
the experts say, as you said it could be very very old or very modern,

i've looked at the actual figure again and the bumps on the image seem to be actually the endings of the ridges on the breeks - they are actually ridges as opposed to stripes - and under the magnifying glass he has a hefty cod piece, lol

looking again at the picture, the litle 'bumps' above the knee are jester's bells?

I have a facsimile medieval pilgrim's badge from Winchester and it's - well - 'meat 2 veg'.
Gettting brain cell into gear, I vaguely remember Saint Francis was referred to as 'God's Jester'

yeah, it was a settlement near a castle.

My best guess is that it is some sort of pilgrims badge type thingy, almost got a look of a swiss guard to it.

I think it fell off a hill walkers anorak,and has weathered over the years,,,,,}}

I bet if it was mico'ed it would show signs of being enamled at one time,,,,
