Found this on the internet...

If you’re a McAfee user and get prompted to update to the latest version do not update, reports around the internet are saying that an Update to Dat 5958 is killing SVCHOST.exe.

Numerous reports are coming up, mainly across Twitter with users stating that they are unable to access their PCs after the update because of this problem, and others get BSOD’s as soon as McAfee is started. At the moment it seems to be only Windows XP SP3 systems that are affected by this problem with no reports of problems with Windows Vista and 7 users.

If you are affected by this problem the only solution is to downgrade the client to 5957 and restore SVCHOST.exe.

Update: We've had confirmation that it does ONLY affect Windows XP SP3 users, people with Vista RTM and above and Windows 7 should have no problems.

Update 2: Engadget have had a statement from McAfee saying that they’ve pulled the update from their servers and consumers should not be affected.

Sorry all - I had to rush out earlier, my PC seems happy and McAfee is showing 'no updates'. Seems that the update was withdrawn anyway.

hi budgie rustler re your scan time, we have windows vista with norton anti virus and we choose our time for the scan to run. its set for 10am every day because mostly we are out at work or generally not using the comp that early in the day. can you set the time on yours to a time that suits better?what protection have you got? we use to have avg and you could set that.

I was going to suggest that you set the scan for a night time scan , all you need to do is to remember to leave the pooter running that night instead of shutting down!

Bob
I agree its annoying to have a scan running for say six hours, and at the end...........NO faults found!!!
