They hardly use notebooks now - theres a form or booklet for almost everything.

Here's what you do for, say, a juvenile shoplifter with no previous convictions -

Custody record, tape interview with parent present (or responsible adult), photograph, fingerprint and DNA sample, crime report, crime report amendment to show offender details, victim statement, witness statements, property record, form C&YP1, file of evidence including partial transcript, offender caution forms, PNC and FP forms, computer update for everything.

Assuming a parent came out quickly, it would take about 5 hours to process a 12 year old for stealing a bag of crisps.

If police men had voice recorders instead of notebooks, it would make it easy for a typist to do their notes and they would only have to read and sign at the end of shift. That would give them time to be more visible. And maybe if children were taught the correct way to treat other people and their possessions things would be better.

Allow a policeman to police, to be a law enforcement officer, not spending half a shift or more typing up some crime.

The typing role ought to be given to civilians.

Kay, the funding to recruit more police has fallen over the years, thats why less are joining.

With more funding, they would be able to provide more police.

Perhaps if more were to join the PF they could do supply and demand.but the numbers of those joining the force have fallen in recent years so man power has fallen.

Agree with TW...less time behind a desk filling in forms and dealing with red tape, therefore, freeing them to get out there and police our streets like I'm sure they'd prefer to x

More proper bobbies on the beat, and more time for them to actually police, spending less time at their desks form-filling.

theres alot to be said for the old time copper.i remember mr green he was our local bobby and respected by everyone.and a good man .i watch police reality things on tv .how the hell they keep there patience is beyond me .

ALthough we live in a village it has its idiots i would like to see more of the local bobby kinda thing, tbh the kids round here have a good relationship with the local bobby just the odd idiot running amok lol and its not me i fly around on my stick and beghave, and behave xx

ACPO is the Association of Chief Police Officers. It has no statutory status but acts as a clearing house for national policing policies. So what we get is every chief officer being a member and implementing policies that may be pertinent only to a few forces. It does away with local accountability and local issues and encourages gimmick led policing strategies.

Time and time again we hear about ACPO policy. Get rid of it. Get policing back to local levels for everyday things.

i think thy should be more on the beat, i remember being little and the local beat bobbys had cards, and ya had to get a full set it made the kid approach the bobby to try and get the full set,

on them were various things from, dont touch mactches to stranger danger, butt he pictures were fun, and ya could swop double ones with ya mates, we also had police week at school and they came in for a week to show us the dogs, vehicles and various videos of crimes and things

and made the booy approchable, the kids round here see a bobby and run, lol,

i think the police have a hard time.they have to put up with so much .and when they do all the work to get a conviction ,the judge goes easy .they must get really fed up.

Locally elected police chiefs and the dissolution of ACPO.

It is not so much the policing, because I believe that by and large they do a good job, it is more the options for punishment and rehabilitation I would like to see altered. The sentencing is at best inconsistent and at worst wishy washy.
