I have struggled with Psoriasis all of my life, and my mam always worked, i don't think she would have ever used it as a excuse not to work.
So what a cop out.

sharon, the child she is carrying has the same skin condition,if she has her 14children knowing that they may have this condition also, then she needs to be committed.

I do believe, although I could be wrong, that in the USA they pay for the first child but not any subsequent ones. No idea what they do with multiple births though. Could be something to consider here.

Child benefit, which used to be family allowance IIRC, was originally paid so that women could still feed their families even if her husband was the type to spend all his wages down the pub.

Nowadays things are different so maybe it could be looked at as a possibility of being means tested.

I am not very interested in the financial aspect of this case but just cannot understand how anybody who carries a gene for such an agonizing illness could contemplate having more children who could suffer so.

Evidently at least one of the daughters carries the gene so further generations are likely to be born to suffer excrutiating pain on a daily basis.Iam not saying she should never have had children but she knows how they suffer and still she wants to have as many as possible because she likes being pregnant.

Cat...if it were down to me I would count that as one birth :) and therefore paid to each child at the same rate as it would have been had it just been the one.

Other than that I think there should be a 'sliding scale' certainly after the first two ( or maybe 3? undecided lol) births.. be they single or multiple.

AnninGlos Report 19 Apr 2010 15:06

I think the twins/triplets may be counted as one birth but not sure what should happen about benefits.

"This being just one country [E.U. member] where they're entitled to child benefit IF the parent/partner has worked in the U.K. for a year."

I will digress for a moment to point out that these people will be paying tax and national insurance.

I read this story last week and thought that he shouldn't have been allowed to give up his job and claim benefits. If she wants 14 children that is her choice but she, and/or her husband, should support them.

Just one more thing. Rose, re the child benefit, what would you do if someone had a child then had another pregnancy that resulted in twins/triplets? :-)

hi all,
im sorry if some people are upset about this thread, but it was started because after i read the story in the local paper(they are local to me but i dont know them) i was so mad i had to speak out. the reason being.
Anglesey is a small place,in the last few months,
400 men lost their jobs when the local alluminium plant closed down,
200 men lost their jobs in the local meat factory.
stena which ferries people to ireland from holyhead has made 100 redundant.
and this man goes to the papers and boasts that he sits on his backside all day, drives a merc people carrier(i of two cars)and gets £42 grand a year for doing nothing.come on wouldnt that make your blood boil.x

I think Cassidy, that the point of the thread was to comment on a very specific case...not a general discussion on the benefit/ pensions systems per se.

Perhaps a seperate discussion thread on benefits and pensions might be a good idea ?

Cassidy

Cassidy Report 19 Apr 2010 12:58

Just seem's to me that you've given yourselves an easy target to gripe about...when you should all be looking at the bigger picture...concerning "Benefit's".

I don't think this thread is about pensions cassidy is it?

Cassidy

Cassidy Report 19 Apr 2010 12:13

Hi Suzanne,at the same time...why not ask our government why "Child Benefit" is paid [approx £ 35 Million each year] to non U.K.born or resident in the U.K. to bank account's in Poland ?.

This being just one country [E.U. member] where they're entitled to child benefit IF the parent/partner has worked in the U.K. for a year.

As you can imagine..our government has had difficulty with this,as they can't confirm the accuracy of the claims!

As for pensions...The private sector has been screwed !but, the public sector still continue's with "Gold Plated",Indexed Linked pension's.

It now seem's that if you don't work for the "State"...you won't financially get looked after in your old age.

Nickydownsouth Report 19 Apr 2010 10:35

If shes only 29 years old now...imagine how many children she actually may have!!....

She could go on having them for at least another 15 years.....with bigger houses and more benfits thrown in along the way....

I know they are only using a system that allows them to live like this, but somewhere the Goverment has to change things to stop people thinking they can churn out as many children as they want and the Tax Payer will pick up the bill.

I beleive that in some states in America a while back they bought in Laws where by if you were on Welfare and had more Children, you had to make to do with original amount of money you were receiving, and not get any extra, if I remember correctly the % of births didn`t rise as quickly as before and many mums went out to work, hence giving up Welfare.

Not sure if thats the exact facts, but something along those lines..........Our government could take a leaf out of the Americans book on this one.......

Cassidy,

This woman WAS a teenager of 17 when she had her 1st child.
She is only 29 now and her eldest is 12,,,,and she has the rest of the brood

Mr and Mrs Davey met 13 years ago in a pub and had their first child, Jessica, a year later.

They then went onto have Jade, ten, Jamie-Anne, eight, Harriet, six, Adele, four, the couple's only son Tie, three, and Mercedes, two.

The couple now receive weekly payments of £439 in income support, £87 in housing benefits, £99 child benefit, £18 council tax benefit.

That is on top of a carer's allowance of £53 and a disability living allowance of £119 to support their son who suffers with a skin disorder.

Well it just goes to show working all your life doesn't pay off nowadays.

Crikey they get more in week than I do in a month from my pension and I don't get any help with rent or council tax.

He needs the snip and she needs the same..

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 18 Apr 2010 21:30

well said everyone, and yes i agree with those who commented on the childs genetic condition, the child she is carrying also has the same condition, she wants 15 children-what if all of her future children have the same condition has her baby and the child shes carrying?im sorry but i dont think she has much between her ears,to carry on having babys when you know that they may be born with a horrible painfull skin condition is madness and very cruel, but at the end of the day its more money, another £119pw per child in disabillity .they need their heads testing.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 18 Apr 2010 21:05

Those were my thoughts when I read about her little boy. She kept saying when she was interviewed how much attention he needs and how hard it is and now the husband is saying he can't get a job because he needs to care for his son. If they knew it was genetic why di they go on and have more children, it is cruel to the child.

Sharron

Sharron Report 18 Apr 2010 20:13

Having read a little more about this family I am pretty incensed too. The benefits they claim are a bit of an irritation but it seems their little boy and the child she is carrying suffer from that very painful didease where the skin doesn't adhere properly.Like Jonny Kennedy,

The mother plans to have fourteen children.

Surely children who are going to suffer in that way deserve to not be conceived deliberately.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 17 Apr 2010 23:02

I think this dismay at how easy it is to "live off the state" is shared by many in this country.

We currently have 3 Main Candidates to take over the running of the country....if any one of them would promise to deal with freeloading families like this one, and insure that people who went out to work and payed in to our Tax and National Insurance Sysytem would be better off...i`m sure they`d get a lot more votes....

Please note, I am not having a go at everyone on any sort of benefits......there are many people out there who have to claim benefits because of the situation they find themselves in, and probably hate every moment of it......

But thats what benefits should be, a stop gap in your hour of need, till hopefullly you can get back on your feet..........Not a way of life.... and certainly not a meal ticket to produce as many children as you want at the Tax Payers expense.
