Hi Karen,

I use both and find Ancestry good to use but can be expensive.

hi karen,

It all depends on which membership you take out and what info you want I found it useful in bdm's and census their notice board I find hard to understand and to post on that's why I use genes I have a tree on both sites

I love Ancestry,

I have the one up from the basic package but I want access to the London parish records as I have a huge number of Londoners in the tree and in the One Name Study so that's been such a help and such a saving on marriage certs as well.

Ancestry is great. Apart from the census, and BMDs, you have military records, parish records for London and others, and more to come ...

I use GR for the wealth of knowledge of it's members, the odd 'hotmatch' and to chat, but Ancestry for researching.

I am now a member of Ancestry it is good but i find printing out a family tree a pain as with GR it doesn't show all siblings due to some of my family having six or seven children and it doesn't show on the printout
any ideas how to get it all on one print out?

You could try

View family tree...from the profile page of the person you are centred on,

Then the middle button 'Family'. There is an expansion button to show siblings, but it doesn't give their spouses etc.

Karen,

I could not be without Ancestry! (Nor Genes, for different reasons, as RR says above.)
I recently found, through Ancestry, a distant cousin who says we are definitely related, and she has now given me my Gran's tree - right back to 1066.
I have now worked with this information - and can't believe who has turned out to be a direct Grandparent of mine! Names out of the history books.
I knew nothing about my paternal Gran when I started, except for her parents, and now that all my family are dead, there is no-one left to ask.
I just wish I could tell them just exactly who they were descended from!
I would strongly recommend that you spend time on Ancestry checking out possible connections as they come up - and, if they have public trees, click onto these and scroll through the names - quite often this gives a lot of useful information. It does take a hell of a lot of time though, as my neglected house can testify!

Once i have got into finding my tree the time just goes so fast, 3 or 4 hours have gone before you look up again, and i have only just started tracing my family, but now my husband has got me finding his family so time really does flyby!!!!
We what doesn't get done today, may get done tomorrow.... not

Hi Karen, Welcome to the world of family history. Your life has now changed, your conversations will cause people's eyes to glaze over, and you will be heard to mutter GRO, BDM, parish registers, frequently in your sleep.
As the others have said GR is for conversations and asking for help scaling those brick walls. This magic site has the ability to assist you in your search, provide hours of entertainment, tears and laughter, and if you wish fights and arguments.

Always remember you may ask for assistance here. Surf around the Tips board and read the handy hints.

Ancestry is for searching and finding the information you need. Don't bother with the forums, questions, and chat options on Ancestry, you will never get an answer. And yes search out the trees options.

FMP (Finding My Past) is very good for immigration and emigration. You don't need a membership with that site just purchase credits if you need to do a search. And remember if you sound desperate enough some kind soul on GR might assist you with your search.

Ancestry and FMP have about the same information.

You can also access the free sites Family Search and Rootsweb and also the FreeBDM and FreeCen. Family Search also have an experimental site called Family Labs.

There are many more option some cost money others just lots of time. Remember the golden rule Google, Google, Google.

And have fun!! Oh your life is about to change.
