In old parish records (pre 1809) I've seen baptism records for one church where the priest had recorded date of birth, mother's maiden name, where both father and mother came from (if they were not originally of the parish) and where mum and dad married ... BUT you don't get that sort of record very often and when they standardised the parish record forms in 1809ish any extra info was not added.

Sometimes you get lucky!

Kevin, you won't get any of that information on a simple search of English/Welsh indexes.

After 1911, births do show the mother's surname. But the index never shows parents' full names, for births or marriages. For that, you have to order the birth certificate (which will show both parents' names, if they were reported) and the marriage certificate (which will show the father's name, if it was reported ... and was true!).

In old parish records, usually the father's full name and mother's given name is recorded for baptisms. In the very old ones, the mother wasn't mentioned.

The fully transcribed parish marriage records at www.freereg.org (which are very incomplete, since the work of transcribing has just begun) sometimes give the father's full name.

If you say what you're looking at, it could help someone explain better.

English birth certs have the mother on, both her current and former names.

English certs are just not very informative. Mothers are not considered important over there. We in New Zealand are much more enlightened!
