Hi
I am nudging this as I have had a small success in finding relations of the family of the man who painted my painting. I am sending them a photo and scan of his photo. I have found a first cousin somewhat removed on ancestry. So it was worth the look.
Think I may post his name up in Trying to Find.

Can't keep everything in life that we all accumulate, goodness think what our houses would be like. (Looks quickly around at all the boxes!) but it is nice to keep some items that cover a good cross section of family.

Old Photos are another matter and personally I think it is sad so many people just throw them away when they could be archived in some sort of way, so many photos are useful to other people in research etc. Not just family research but local and general history.

What a lovely story Cowslip, and someone else to do research on.......how sad the painting was lost to the family, and with the photo and history on the back......someone felt enough about this chap to want him remembered.......and a family bible......makes me wonder what my family will do with all my stuff.....

I remember thinking when we were clearing Mum's clothes, and they were in black binsacks in her hall, waiting to go to charity........is this how we end up.......binsacks in a hall.....

She was a great one for .....the Charity shops and car boot sales, and used to drag Dad into them if she was in a different town, and I am looking at one of her car boot candlesticks now........but when she passed a lot of the stuff she bought went back to the charity shops

Just think, does all the stuff in charity shops just get recycled all the time....

btw. its me..... Moonchild......but being Sally again....

Sadly Its often the way with borrowed items isn't it.

I have been trawling the charity shops today again but sadly nothing much this time, although i did also visit the local council recycling centre where a man offered me two life size plastic lobsters. They are now sat on my table with me left wondering why I ended up saying yes.

I am thinking of placing them in a large Hawthorn tree by my boundary wall as a talking point. They could look rather decorative.

Wish someone could " Come across" my wifes' family's family Bible.
it went AWOL after the person died, and another family member
" Borrowed" it for a while....

no where to be found now.......

Hi Deb

Not searched yet but will do as it is just a basic 19th century Bible not a posher one with photos but it does have lots of names and addresses of owners in it and i would like to give it to someone it means something to. The place is local to me anyway I am guessing it was a family member who threw it away I caught him as he took it out of the car with a pile of other books, but it is quite likely that other family member he doesnt know may like it, I know i would if it were my family.

Researching it all sounds a mammoth task Quoy good luck!

Have you searched for the names on this site?
The family bible would mean a lot to the descendants.

My best find was an oil painting for 50p painted prior to the first world war. It is signed and the canvas has the names of the various people in the family who owned it over the years and addresses etc. Stuck in the back of the canvas was a photo of the painter with his name on the back and a brief history of him having gone off to the war and lost his life on the fields of flanders etc. It was so sad to see it abandoned and the painting was actually very good quality and a good subject matter. There was a small tear. So i bought it then sent it to a very good restorer to repair and do a light clean and reframe appropriate to date. It is now beautiful and adorns a wall.
It seemed sad someday i will try to trace relatives to see if anyone would like a photo/copy etc.
My other good find was at a skip site where I stopped someone throwing away a family bible again with names of all the owners going back to the 1840s and the name of the Inn that they lived in. It would now make a really personal decorative item for that Inn.
Okay I just love collecting!
