this looks like the marriage between Gladys and Francis Laidler from freebmd (free to search), there are two refs so one will be her maiden name and one her name from her first marriage

Marriages Jun 1926 (>99%)
Cotterill Gladys F Laidler St Geo H Sq 1a 1028
LAIDLER Francis Stanley St.Geo.H.Sq. 1a 1028
LAIDLER Francis Cotterill St.Geo.H.Sq. 1a 1028
Stanley Gladys F Laidler St.Geo.H.Sq. 1a 1028

this is her first marriage from the same site, maiden name Cotterill, first married name Stanley:

Marriages Sep 1915 (>99%)
Cotterill Gladys F Stanley Cannock 6b 1202
Stanley Albert H Cotterill Cannock 6b 1202

there are two possible births, surname Stanley and mother's maiden name Cotterill showing on freebmd, it is just possible these people are still living so I haven't added their names here, one in 1917 in Cannock district and one in 1924 in Chorlton district, you can go to freebmd yourself and easily find them

can't say for sure, but the only death refs for an Albert H Stanley I can find on freebmd are for either 1913 i.e. before the marriage to Gladys or 1935 i.e. after her second marriage, you would need to look on the CWGC site to see if he died in the war, otherwise it is a possibility they got divorced, try the National Archives, using J77 as reference

Please could anyone help. I'm looking for info relating to a distant relative in my family tree. Her name is gwladys cotterill born 1898 till 1974, i know that she was married twice, the second being a francis laidler, but i believe she had a son before this second marriage but can find no records of him. Also i have very little info on her mother, a florence bird 1884, is there anyone out there that could help

Could this be William's birth reference (with the names the other way round):-

Name: Francis William Bird
Year of Registration: 1874
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Birmingham (1837-1924)
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 74

If so this could be the family on the 1881 census (father looks like a good match):-

Name: Francis Bird
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1875
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

William Bird 37, Journeyman Plater (Brass) - could easily move on to silver plating.

James Bird 12
Florence Bird 10
Walter Bird 8
Francis Bird 6
Harry Bird 4
Albert Bird 1

Did William have a middle name? There is this family on the 1881 census where the father is called William and it has his occupation as Electro Plate which doesn't seem too much of a jump to Silver Plater:-

Name: William J. Bird
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1875
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Birmm, Warwickshire, England
Civil parish: Birmingham
County/Island: Warwickshire
Country: England
Street Address: 7 George St West
Education:

Employment status:

Occupation: Scholar
Registration district: Birmingham
Sub-registration district: All Saints
ED, institution, or vessel: 15

Household Members:
Name Age

William Bird 32
Mary Bird 27
William J. Bird 6
Lilly Bird 2
Albert E. Bird 6 months

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 3005; Folio: 112; Page: 9; GSU roll: 1341718.

Do the witnesses on the marriage certificate give any clues to the family?

I'm confused, as while tracing back my roots i have established that william bird 1874 has listed his father as also being called william bird ( a silver plater) on his marriage cert., however in searching the records, there are only two william birds in the 1891 cenus from the birmingham area but neither one has their father listed as william???. Does this mean that william' s father was not actually called william or was he called william please help
