Hi Gwen, I have used flat lemonade or coke in the past for a dodgy tum!
Did you know that grated apple helps an upset tum too, grate it and let it go a little bit brown, about ten minutes and then just eat that and drink water to alleviate symptoms.

Good old Vaseline (petroleum jelly) works for lots of things, got rid of some flaky skin on my face that no other creams would touch.

I wash all my kids cuts and sores in diluted janola then drop on straight t tree oil I have never had to give or use antibiotics on them yet.
This was used on me as a child in the 60s and works a treat.
Bob I always thought the cure for chilblains was urine LOL is that what yours is

Like Brenda - my mum insisted I wear a camphor bag around my neck.

Used those blue packets for the laundry rinsing on bee stings.

The granny down the road from me had me and her grandson rub pumpkin all over our hands and feet because we had been playing in the tar. I presume it worked - none on me now.

Loved gripewater - love Irish moss and now Gees Linctus - and the smell of wintergreen ointment when massaged on cramped legs.

My dad used to put a soap and sugar and poultice on prickles/splinters etc that had got imbedded in and that used to draw them out.

But the silliest one out was my mother would put butter on wherever you bumped yourself - walked around feeling like a slice of toast.

with him being on oxygen regularly, you could see you doc or phone um up and ask um to prescribe something to help him,
like a nasal spray for clear his airways,
also you can get a throat spray called artificial saliva, to help with dry mouths, this should help a lot,

Julie....My OH does have a nasal spray from the doctor and we can't complain about the service we get from the oxygen team.Even the consultant comes with her about every 2 months and sits having tea and cake. The problem is because after being on oxygen for over 3 years he is now on the highest amount and it does dry up the nose.He has taken to wearing the mask more now instead of canula. Thanks for your concern.

Old bean...Bile beans were laxatives and supposed to keep you fit and healthy. My gran used to take Phyllosan. Anyone remember"Phyllosan fortifies the over forties"
Persey...Wonder why we put butter on a bump?.Must confess I believe I did it with my children obviously because my mum had done it.

sorry folks pmsl
Persey, you reminded me of my late Dad, who would always manage to catch his head on the metal window frame - he would forget it was open if he was tipping stuff down the drain outside the kitchen window, and the times he cut his head and Mum would give him a butter paper with the butter still on, from the pastry cooking box, to rub on the cut! I am pmsl cos I am remembering his language lol

I saw some Fisherman's Friend lozenges the other day and did mean to get some just to eat, cos I remembered the taste lol Must do it when I go out today.

Reading this thread I see 2 terms I haven't heard for years - chilblains and liberty bodices. I am male but had 4 sisters who had the preceding. I just had boils as a pubescent teenager. Between the ages of 8 - 11 I went to boarding school in a famous university city and each night the boarders were sent to bed with a big spoonful of something which came out of a large brown jar. It was, I think, a malt product but have never seen or known of it since. I moved out of the UK in my very early adulthood and now live in an environment where the winter temps can get to -50C with summer temps of +30C.. A bit different than life in Liverpool! But I have not known of any of the local kids getting medical problems such as chilblains that we did in the UK. And I am now so old that I do remember the blue and white National Health orange and cod liver oil bottles - and I still continue the practice of consuming such on a daily basis - along with that other British staple - Marmite - all because my mum said it was good for me!

I was just thinking earlier must mention Malt and there you go Richard had to have Malt - did it make you a big strong lad Richard?

My mother was worried because around the age of four/five/six - I did not put on any weight from one year to the next - and so we were regular visitors to the local pharmacy to have a weigh in - Chemists don't look like that nowadays - then it was an apothacarian delight with all its jars of powders etc that he would dispense. But he sent us home with a jar of Maltexo and everynight I had to have my malt to make me a big girl.

Let me tell you it worked... take a look at me now. (((((damn stuff))))))

Think our malt here was...Codliver oil and Malt...Think you can still get it but in different flavours.

We have a cat medicine for cats with upset tummies, and that is based on malt. One cat will take it off the end of the tube, he loves it so!.
I was given codliver oil and malt because I was so pasty! I am now a unhealthy 11 and A half stone!
There is also Halibut oil and malt.

Richard - I remember having both Radio Malt and Virol - (not together!) perhaps it was one of those you had?

Ah now I know what to blame for my extra weight lol!

When the school doctor checked me over as a young child, he told my Mum I was wiry! I was never a chubby child and was a bit of an Olive Oyl in my young teens, but that Virol and Codliver oil and malt I was given, must have been lurking there all those years waiting to settle on my middle lol
I think I did buy a jar once to try it when my son was small, but can't remember if we ate it between us or what happened to it, could be at the back of a cupboard somewhere lol

My son loved codliver oil straight off the spoon and would remind me to get it when in Superdrug or somewhere, he had it from the time he was about 3 till he was about 7 and then went off it!

I am beginning to think we are related Liz.

Butter and Malt - etc
I always thought my mother was an only child - now I think she had a platonic sister in your mum.

I used to get codliver oil in capsule form for my children and they used to pop the shell and loved the codliver oil. They very rarely had colds though. That was in the 60's.

All I can say in response to my earlier comments is that malt, marmite, cod liver oil and orange juice have kept me very healthy - and my daily regimen now includes a glass of red wind and copious cups of coffee. And still showing a not now quite full head of hair in its almost original colour. Which leads me into the topic of hair colour. My 4 sisters and I are now into our 60's and we all display little if any grey hairs - we all look much younger than our chronological age - must be the Yorkshire/North and South Wales genetic influence. Because we came from not very productive families we have no direct cousins just those very distant. And those I've met don't show such genetic traits. So if you have Ingleby, Walker, Roberts, Evans backgrounds do any of you have such traits?
