I know this is a subject that some people might not want to talk about, but i have been diagnosed with one and would like to know what treatment other people have had if they have suffered with one.
I'm 50 years old and last year started having monthly problems. sometimes I would be constant for 6 weeks and they would be heavy, and then I would go longer without having nothing. Thought it might be the change starting, but went to Dr's and he checked me over and took some bloods and said he was going to make me an appointment to see the gynaecologist, which I did do at the beginning of Dec. He also examined me and took a biopsy and made an appointment to go for a scan and suggested that if there was nothing found i should have a coil fitted, as this would put the necessary hormones directly in the required area. I went for the scan in January and had a letter back last week to say that a fibroid that is 3 and a half inches by 2 and a half inches has been found. I've got to go back on the 30th of March to see the gynaecologist to discuss what is to be done. I'm hoping that if any of you ladies out there that has had any experience of them would mind saying what treatment they have had. If you don't want to put it on the board then please pm me.
I have started having cramp like pains over the last few weeks and I am having to visit the little room more frequently than before. And according to the blood tests, I haven't started the change yet.

Helen, I am sure there are several people who have experienced this problem so hope you get some info and advice. Let's hope everything gets sorted out soon so you feel lots better, are you anaemic now with the heavy loss?

I don't know of anyone recently who has suffered with them Helen but did years ago when if you were over child bearing age they would do a hysterectemy (sp?), if you were younger I think they would remove the fibroid. But things and treatment change, have you tried googling netdoctor?

Hope you can get it cleared up soon because it is obviously going to drag you down.

Helen I know how you feel. It happened to me when I was 35yrs old .I felt so ill anyway I had a hysterectomy , this was in 1976, so treatment could have changed now. I had to have blood given me before the operation I was so anaemic.
Well it was the making of me and,I have never looked back. .After the operation I was told the fibriod was huge.
Anyway good luck and don`t worry if you end up with a hysterectomy you will feel so well afterwards. And the operation is not that bad.

Thats one big fibroid you have.I suffered with them for a couple of years. As I was only in my 30's they wouldn't do alot for me in the end at 39 I had a hysterectomy and have not looked back. Best thing they ever did for me.

I thought the standard treatment for fibroids was a D&C first. If that failed and they came back, only then would they consider a hysterectomy.

My mum had fibroids and had a couple of D&C's before they finally decided that a Hysterectomy would be the only solution as she was becoming so anaemic. My MIL had a D&C at 58 with hers and never looked back.

My Sis had a massive fibroid in 1989 (aged 42). She had a hysterectermy.

She felt well very soon after the op.

My Mum had a hyster. in 1970, she swore that it cured her hay fever!!

She was very pleased that she had it done, had a new lease of life.

I would swear by hysterectomy too. I had fibroids and very heavy monthlies which were very restrictive as regards lifestyle, not daring to go anywhere during the wrong week, being anaemic, tired all the time etc. I asked the GP if I could have the hysterectomy as we didn't want any more children anyway, and he agreed straight away. I had it done in 2007 and have never looked back. They left my ovaries so that I can go through a natural menopause rather than hurtling me straight into it.

Why am I not surprised that it cured your mum's hay fever lol

The minute I had the hysterectomy done it cured my dreadfully sweaty feet. They used to be so bad that I had to peel my tights/socks off and take skin with it. As soon as I had the op my feet were as sweet as a nut, so I can only think that the excessive sweating must have been hormonal.

I stopped having migraine after a hysterectomy. If you are past child bearing then a hysterectomy is the best option. Not such a dreadful experience and you soon feel the benefits.

My mum would have been pleased to hear that she wasn't the only one who had additional benefits from her op.
When she told people about it, they tended to give her funny looks!

Good luck Helen, I didn't see this thread 1st time around I had a D&C to remove mine and then surgery, no hysterectomy for me as I was on the IVF program ....now I just wish they had removed the ruddy thing and saved me years of grief !

Getting rid of the fibroids was a lot less hassle then anything else I went through

Hi folks,
Well went and saw Dr's at the hospital and after discussing the options, I am going to have a Hysterectomy, besides the fibroid I also have some cysts on my left ovary so it will be a total hysterectomy. I've got to go and have an injection first to try and shrink the fibroid down so that there won't be as much blood loss, then once I've had that then it will be anytime after then but hopefully within 3 months I can have the op. So as soon as I have any more details as to when it will be I'll let you know.

Well I got home from work tonight to find a letter from the hospital, I've got to go next Thursday for my pre-op assesment and then hopefully, with bed availability I will go in on the 12th of May.
