You can remember back that far :-0

I must be off and start doing a little housework. Having been inside most of yesterday there isn't much to do but I want to do some craft work today. The quicker I get the jobs done the quicker I can sit down and craft to my heart's content :-)

Goodnight Up-Toppers <3 <3

Enjoy the day Down Underers <3 <3

I can remember one of the cinemas in Oldham back in the late 50s and 60s that had double seats AND an usherette who used to shine her torch on there!

I didn't know that cinemas still had double seats :-D

Mind you, I haven't been to a cinema in something like 40 years!

No, I am kind, I can vaguely remember being that age myself ;-)

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 19 Oct 2013 23:13

You don't give the canoodlers a nasty shock by shining the torch on them? There was a theatre usher who was infamous for that many years ago in one of the theatres in town :-(

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 19 Oct 2013 23:07

There are canoodlers in our cinema sometimes Sue. we don;t mind as long as they are right at the back, it keeps them quiet at any rate

I remember a poor little baby in a campsite years ago who was sat in the awning of a tent and still got bad sunburn and blisters from the reflection of the sun. His parents felt dreadful :-(

To be honest Sue, living in Leonora nearly caused a split. It was fine for me travelling far and wide each day, but not so nice for OH stuck at home with two children.

I'm talking of 30 years ago; RFDS service as no medic in town, no swimming pool, no High School.

We did it for three and a half years. By that time I had established myself with the Health Dept of WA so there was no problem with moving. That's when we came down to the SW in 1986 and have been here ever since :-D

I remember my daughter having a baby sitter one summer. I guess J would have been about 6, and the babysitter about 16.

Babysitter took her down to the beach, and knew my instructions re J wearing a T-shirt to protect her shoulders when playing.

J apparently threw an absolute strop, and refused point-blank to wear it.

So she came home with red shoulders that blistered.

She didn't do that again!

Unlike me who blistered my shoulders and arms (at least) at least once every summer.

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Oct 2013 22:55

I also used to be encouraged to go out and play in the sun .......

......... even though I would then have to be covered with calamine lotion!

and that was in Lancashire.

OH's problem seems to be from driving the car ......................... the left side is worse than the right side, and that, of course, is the side that has been exposed to the sun whenever he has driven in the summer for the last 46 years in the US and here.

Previously, the right side had been exposed for about 12/13 years of driving in the UK and Europe

He's never worn a hat in the car, and he didn't very often outdoors until recent years. He used to say he had a thick head of hair and so wasn't susceptible to sunstroke .................. which was what everyone worried about more than sub burn.

He had a Tilley hat for some years in the early 2000's then managed to lose it in San Antonio around 2005.

I bought him an Aussie hat in Adelaide in 2008, and he loves it, so wears it much of the time. One lady told him he looked like Harrison Ford :-0

He also wears baseball-type caps now ............... but they're not really that much protection for ears and necks when you think about it!

My grandchildren all wear the UV protection swimsuits. Aimee, Joel and Aiden are very fair skinned so it's hats and sunscreen for everyone. Drew is dark like his mum but he is still covered up. I guess we all know the dangers of the sun now - shame we didn't know when we were younger. I used to desperately try to tan but only turned bright red :-(

LindainHerriotCountry Report 19 Oct 2013 22:48

I was always paranoid about covering my children in sunscreen Allan, because we knew better by then. of course they objected as teenagers, but I took no notice.

I pointed out to my daughter how careful she is in making sure Eve has sunscreen on at all times and reminded her how much she objected when i did it to her

Eve has one of those full body swimsuits with UV protection. I find it odd that it is only the English children who seem to wear them when we are on holiday in places such as Greece The worst are the Russians who have even tiny babies uncovered in strong sun while I am under the shade

SueMaid Report 19 Oct 2013 22:46

That was the idea, Allan - get some colour in the sun. I'm amazed that so far I've had no suspicious spots. I get checked once a year and nothing has caused a worry.

The sun in Leonora would be punishing. What did your good lady think about living there? My son liked it when he was there working for 3 months but said he couldn't live there. He did need a jacket, beanie and gloves at night.

Allan

Allan Report 19 Oct 2013 22:41

Hello Sue

When we first arrived in Leonora everyone said Let your kids play in the sun and get rid of the pale colour.

We did, and many years later our daughter ended up having 18 moles removed from her back and several from her chest :-(

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 19 Oct 2013 22:37

Haven't done that for a long time, Linda :-D Do you find canoodlers in your theatre?

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 19 Oct 2013 22:35

Best to stay in, or get OH to take you to see a nice romantic film in an air conditioned theatre, you could canoodle in the double seats on the back row :-D

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 19 Oct 2013 22:29

No Linda - it was really quite unpleasant outside because of the smoke. It will be the same today. They are advising people with asthma and other conditions to stay indoors. We are fine but it is still irritating and we found ourselves coughing. I can't imagine what it must be like in the fire areas :-(

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 19 Oct 2013 22:23

Did you get your gardening done Sue

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 19 Oct 2013 22:21

Hello Allan :-)

I remember being told to go and play outside in the sunshine as I was always curled up inside with a book. I am very fair skinned and was always sunburned through summer.

No sign of the fires letting up. We are due for high temperatures again for the next few days. This will only make conditions worse - especially for our poor firefighters.

I also used to think it normal to go through the peeling process ........ and that I would then begin to tan :-(

I cannot count the number of times I got blistered and peeling shoulders :-(

Even my daughter did that during the late 70s and early 80s, despite what anyone told her.
