Hello Berona,
I think the home will shapen their pencil after I spoke to them today. I practically burned that woman's ears off - without being offensive.
How dreadful that your 16 yr old grand daughter should have to share a room with men. For all its faults, I can't see that happening here in an NHS hospital, never mind a private hospital. There is, wherever possible, a same sex policy in wards throughout the NHS, certainly with young people. What an unpleasant experience for the poor girl

That's the problem when you haven't had the chance to view places, Tec. Getting your licence will make a great difference.
This is all so difficult for you and the Duchess and I very much feel for you both <3

Hello Sylvia,
We are going to see OH tomorrow.
It will be very hard to get her to understand that we weren't told.

Tec - that was disgraceful and I'm glad you rang and told them so. I hope it makes them pull their socks up and do the right thing in future. How is the duchess? Is she OK now?
I had an experience too. My grand-daughter, just turned 16, was suddenly stricken with a urinary tract infection. Her GP wasn't available, so she was taken to the hospital. Her parents pay (dearly) for private health insurance and she was admitted as a private patient. .. First night, she sat in a chair in a room with two other patients, because she couldn't lie down. Second night, she was given a room of her own (what they pay for!), but on the third night, she was moved into a room for 4. Two beds empty and the third occupied by a man. She couldn't sleep because she was too uncomfortable with him there.and then she was moved again into another room for 4 and shared it with three men. There was a curtain separating her from the men, but she still couldn't sleep because they were there. Thankfully, she went home next day. It was obvious that the hospital claims for the cost of a private room from her insurance - but I was disgusted. Some of these medical people tend to forget that they are dealing with all kinds of people and they get a little too open-minded. This was her first experience at being in hospital and she has come home with the feeling of fear at the idea of having to go to hospital in the future.

The staff were probably all asleep.
There are almost daily horror stories about the care of the elderly in residential homes in Britain. They work on a shoestring, and in some home that is reflected in the standard of care. There are of course some excellent homes, with well trained caring people running them. Unfortunately, the way things happened when I was taken ill in early January she was taken into the first home in the area that had a bed available. We had no time to view or make any enquiries about this place. There are other homes in the North of the county, and so long as I get my driving licence back that doesn't matter. Some of them can be 70 miles away, but that's alright if I can drive and get to see her a couple of times a week, as I would like to now if only. I will be going to the home tomorrow and will ask to see whoever is on duty in charge. I want to see the doctors report from the hospital on discharge. It won't be the woman in charge overall, as she doesn't work weekends.

Oh Tec - I wish that for you too but the best you can do is find the Duchess a good safe place that will look after her properly. At least your mind would be settled. I'm sure your daughter will feel more at ease too.
I can't believe she was able to wander - is there a lack of staff in this place?

It is dreadful Sue. The only explanation I got from the manageress was that she assumed somebody else had done it. Apparently OH had a quite serious hypo, and the doctors have been trying to stabilise her. It must have been serious for her to be in that long. We are generally dissatisfied with the home generally, and I'm going to make enquiries about other options. A few weeks ago she got disorientated and confused wandering about at night. No one noticed, and she found her way out of a fire escape door. She fell, injuring her legs with cuts and bruises. Apparently she knocked on someone's door, and the home collected her. I've never received a satisfactory report about that issue. God I wish I could have her home.

Oh no, Tec - that's too dreadful for words. I can't believe they didn't contact you. I assume that she is well as they have discharged her but eight days :-0
Poor Duchess - it must have been so confusing for her.

Good Morning Sue,
Are you off to buy more pots? :-D oh go on, you know you want them :-D
I am not in the best of humours today. This morning I had a phone call from a hospital 45 miles away, to inform me that the doctors had done their ward rounds, and that OH would be discharged today, and returned to the nursing home. This came as a shock as until then I had no idea that she was in hospital. I enquired when was she admitted, and was told on the 22nd May - eight days ago. No one at the home had thought or bothered to notify me, or my daughter. We were due to visit her today. I was absolutely furious and appalled. OH must have thought nobody cared that she was there, as nobody bothered to visit all week. Had I have known, I could have arranged transport to the hospital. Anyway I phoned the home and made my feelings very clear leaving them in no doubt what I thought of their care policy. Supposing something had gone badly wrong, and we didn't even know that she was in there - I cooled down now - a bit :-0

I have a new hobby....Australian pottery, I'm filling my house with it :-) OH and I started collecting pieces years ago, so he loves it too, I am taking it further now and trying to learn as much as I can as I find it so interesting.
Nice to see you back on the thread Perse :-)

Hello Tec, your garden sounds interesting, how is your magnolia tree? I had one once, but I don't think it liked me or it didn't like our heat and we were in drought at that time, I'd like to try again :-)
