I suppose you normally walk Linda, but can you get near the allotment in the car with water?

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:35

Lol , I hadn't noticed you had missed out a letter , I think my brain just filled it in :-S

I stopped growing lillies but I only spotted two or three of the beetles on my Fritillaries this year and I squiched them superfast !

Well , I had better be saying Goodnight . OH is off fishing tomorrow .

Night night Tec and Linda

If we run out, we will have to take water from home which will be a pain. Hopefully we will have a thunderstorm at the end of next week

Who is Amada? :-D :-D

Didn't the Spanish have one of them? :-D

Tecwyn Report 17 Jul 2013 23:29

Thank you for looking that up Amada - I will certainly watch out for the signs, and the beetles. I also have tree lily's now in their second year - they are huge this year and covered in enormous buds.

Here is the link Tec , hope it helps ( if it is indeed them causeing the bother ) .

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:25

Tec , I've just looked on the RHS website ( I googled Lily beetle ) and according to them the beetle is spreading in Wales , Scotland and has reached Ireland :-( look out for black blobs on the stems of the lillies , the grub ( larva ) of the beetle leaves them behind .... ugh ! If you do happen to see the bright red buggers be careful as when you go to touch them they fall on the ground , on their backs , so you lose sight of them . They are crafty insects :-|

Should have made the farmer pay to have the water restored :-0

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Jul 2013 23:21

There is no mains water on the allotments, there used to be until a farmer ploughed through the pipes. We actually have the meter on our plot. It was going to cost a lot to repair, so they never had it done. We have to collect water in barrels from the greenhouse roof

Tecwyn Report 17 Jul 2013 23:20

Interesting little creatures hedgehogs - glad you have water for them Linda - I should put water down for them too - my birds water is too high up.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:19

We have taps on our allotments but a lot of people also have water butts , I think most of those are empty now though .

Will you have to fetch water from home Linda , if it carries on being so dry ?

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:17

Linda , even I've resorted to wearing a hat . I found one of my dear old Dads " beany " hats , I used to love seeing him in that hat , looking all bright and summery (sp?) , I'm glad I kept it because now it is keeping my head cooler and it makes him feel close for a little while :-)

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Jul 2013 23:16

I don't think we have the lily beetle Amanda, but will watch for them.

Linda is your allotment water from a water butt - don't you have a tap there?

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Jul 2013 23:16

Last night we were watching a hedgehog in the dark, it was drinking from the bird bowl on the patio

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Jul 2013 23:14

We used to a hedgehog in the garden but I haven't seen him this year. Ianto always found him, but never harmed him, just looked :-)

I think the hedgehog kept the slugs down

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:14

Are you sure it isn't the dread LIly beetle that is causeing the damage Tec ? Keep a close eye out for a bright red , rather attractive beetle and if you spot it kill the begger :-| :-| :-|

We have ants and green / black fly here but very few ladybirds :-(

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Jul 2013 23:12

I will remember my hat tomorrow I promise, I have loads of Blackcurrants to pick as well
We have hardly any water left on the allotment, only enough to water the greenhouse

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Jul 2013 23:10

Slugs are not too bad here at the moment with it being so dry - if it rains it will be like the whacky races out there :-D

Just that the few we have are hellbent on eating my lily's.

We still have no ants, or green/black fly - very odd.

Amanda the flies don't argue with me and my vacuum :-D

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 17 Jul 2013 23:09

I wish the slugs in my garden would burst :-| I have quite a healthy population of small frogs and they must be making an impact , so I haven't seen the amount of slugs as where about last year ... thank God . I think the long cold winter was at least good for killing those fat blighters off :-P

I hope you can save your lilys Tec .

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Jul 2013 23:06

Oddly we don't have many slugs here
