I wouldn't say very skilful, Tec - but I kept my children nicely clothed. Of course when they reached their teens they wanted shop bought clothing. It's cheaper to buy clothing now for children although I have made little frocks for Aimee.

Well Tec!! There is a strong history of the Merchant Navy in my ancestry on my father's side.

My 3x Great Grandfather had 11 children, 10 sons and a daughter. Of the boys who survived into adulthood all went to sea at some time or other, and most of them died at sea, including my 2x Great Grandfather. Most of them were Sea Captains- including the Cape Horner Captain Dan Nicholas- there is a lot on the internet about him.

He wrote memoirs which have been made into a book, although some of it is erroneous- e.g. his father Evan Nicholas (my 3x Great Grandfather)was press-ganged to take part in the American War of Independence. It was actually the 1812 American War as the first was before he was born!!!

On my mother's side, There is a history of Civil Service abroad.

I also would love to go to Scandinavia especially to see the Northern Lights. I also have Swedish Ancestry.

Sounds like you were very skilful on the machine Sue. My mother would cut up coats and things people had given her and turn out all sorts of things.
She could never manage the fly's on boys trousers, so an old lady who lived nearby would do that bit, in exchange for a bag of sugar :-D

I was in the Merchant Navy Jemima, on the passenger liners. So saw most of the world over the years. We did world cruises, Pacific cruises for the Australians and Americans. The Far East, South America, and of course North America.
I never went to the Scandinavian countries, but would liked to have.

It all sounds very exciting, but you know it just becomes a job in the end. I think the same applies to airline crews

Goodnight Amanda - sleep well <3

I think I may have mentioned that my father in law used to do a lot of sewing years ago. He could also knit - a skill he learnt when he was recovering from a knee injury when he was in the army.

I made all my children's clothes when they were younger. When I was a teenager I made my own clothes, too. If I was going out on a Saturday night I could run up a new frock on a Saturday afternoon :-)

:-) I do like the idea of cobweb curtains Tec , how beautifully quaint .
My three are all old singers , perhaps I ought to sing old songs next time I get one of them out ....lol

I expect the Indian lad was over the moon with your gift to him , perhaps he still has it . <3

Night night

Amanda - We use cobwebs for curtains in the cave - very effective :-D

There's a few sewing jobs I want to do here. Also I want to recover something, but there is a bit of sewing involved.

My mother had an old Singer hand machine. She made lots of clothes for us when we were small.

I once bought a treadle machine as a farewell present to an Indian lad who used to look after me at sea. He wanted the machine, and a bike to take home to his village.

What are you planning to create Tec , new curtains for the cave pehaps ? lol
I usually prefur to use my Mums old hand sewing machine these days , I have three of them :-0 the third one was my Nans , I found it right at the back of my late brothers spare room when we had to clear his flat . I like the gentle sound of the old machines :-D

Good night again Linda , I hope you feel better in the morning .

Sue , I'll pass on your congrats to Meg :-)

Goodnight again Linda <3

You'll get there, Tec - you can't do much walking so now is the time to sit and concentrate :-D

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 15 Aug 2013 22:55

Is someone making coffee? :-)

Sue, the machine is quite old. The Duchess used it a lot once, but hasn't touched it for years. I have oiled it with machine oil and given it a good clean. It's in very good condition and would sew well with somebody who knew what they were doing.

Amanda I enjoy a challenge, so will conquer the sewing machine eventually.
I was never any good with mechanical things. Still don't fully understand the combustion engine.
Just drive it..........and it goes :-D

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 15 Aug 2013 22:49

I'm not talking to Linda :-|

Something on Home and Away says "strewth" and "stone the bl***y crows". Paul Hogan didn't do much for us either :-(

Coffee would be nice :-)

Tec - just keep trying with the sewing machine. Do you have a manual? If not the instructions should be on the company website.

Amanda - Meg as done very well :-)
