Jemima, it is sad that you lost contact for those years with your mother, and grandmother.

My paternal grandmother was a fantastic cook, and at the time of rationing she could turn out the most amazing nutriious meals. She seemed to spend her life in her kitchen. My grandfather grew all his own veg.

My maternal grandmother (Nain) was not good at general cooking, but made wonderful cakes and pastries. Her apple pie with cloves was to die for, as was her caraway seed cake.

My grandmother made all sorts of things.

I have a memory of a cupboard in the wall of her kitchen, with black painted doors. It was full of home-made jams, wines etc. She made wines out of everything- Potatoes, dandelion, elderflower, etc. I must have been about 4 or 5 at the time, as my parents divorced when I was 5, and I didn't have contact with her again (my mother's mother or my mother come to that) until I was in my mid teens.

Jemima - Linda is being modest. She is a Kitchen Goddess, and taught me how to make my own bread :-)

I am not too keen on garlic, but like to rub a clove around the salad bowl when tossing a salad - just enough.

Actually Linda, the fish and chips are quite good from Fairthingy too - I usually take three lads from the SAS with me though :-D especially in the summer

Yes, I make all the jams and chutneys as well. I wouldn't say I am a good cook, I just like trying things

I use loads of garlic :-D

I like cooking and trying out new things

Fairthingy Indians are not bad Tec, it is just the natives which are exotic :-D

We are having lamb leg steaks tomorrow - I will endeavour not to cremate them :-D

I do all the cooking now Jemima and like simple recipes. My daughter bought me Delia's book a while back, but I find it too complicated, and not for everyday meals.

My OH won't eat anything that is spiced or has herbs in - she has very plain tastes,

Which is obviously why she married me :-D

I think it would be nice to follow some simpler recipes. Nearly every recipe in books etc today have garlic in for example. Garlic doesn't agree with me.

I am not a practised cook as I inherited an OH who refuses to eat anything more than sausage egg and chips and the like! It was difficult trying to encourage my daughter to eat healthy food when her father refused to!!!!

I am accustomed to disasters in the kitchen - usually the smoke alarm notifies me that dinner is ready :-D

The main headings in the book are..........

Appetizers

Beverages,

Bread, biscuits, and coffee cake,

Cakes and icing,

Cakes, small and cookies,

Candies,

Eggs - various concoction thereof,

Fritters and pancakes,

Meat dishes (lots of them, )
one made me cringe -Pigs knuckles with Sauerkraut and dumplings :-S

Pastries and pies,

Potatoes (very extensive recipes for use of potatoes)

Poultry and game,

Preserves,

Puddings (some sound delicious) :-D :-D

Sauces and stuffings,

Soups,

Vegetables and salads.

I know all of the above are in most recipe books, but these are so different, and interesting in their simplicity - most of the ingredients are commonly available now.
