Amanda, I had to think about it as I love the sea at least from the beach, but have always wondered what was beyond it ......an adventure so was surprised to read that an author who writes fantasy about the water actually felt it was a barrier to stop her moving about. can't say I blame you for retreating to the shoreline.

Ray you live by the sea you understand the respect it needs, not as a person but as a being who treated wrong will take your life,

LWH many people who can swim don't like the sea, but learn to swim as there is nothing better than floating on calm also it may save your life one day

lol I know sometimes I talk to you and know your going to say what im thinking lol

Even though I live close to the sea all my life im not a very strong swimmer.

Hello Uzzi.......what an interesting question to ask .

I've lived close to the sea for most of my life .I find it is a great settler of the mind ( in times of trouble and strife )....... it's the vastness and constancy that appeals to me.........from the shoreline that is.........lol

My OH has taken up sailing and I went out for the first time last year.I have NEVER been so scared in my life.We hit a bit of a squall as soon as we left the harbour.........I can tell you , the sea took on a whole different aspect for me at that moment.............I won't be going out there again !

Sally the crab lol you love the sea, like me can't understand the fright of it, note fright not fear. I love sitting on the shore watching it in storm, but admit to being glad that I'm on shore and not on the waves.

LWH I would live happily on a boat, but it is more than just boats

I see the sea as freedom, I look out at it and think of the world beyond it, the creatures swimming free in it.

Even when the sea is rough I find it very calming.

I see the sea as ,something no bugger can build on,

so as not to spoil the view from my window,

How ever they are trying hard to shatter my view,

With those awful wind turbines on the horizon,,,lol

Merlin you are right in that calm its like a puppy to play with, in a storm its to be feared. It sounds as tho you respect it, do you fear crossing it ?

I think most people would love the sea Uzzi......its a sort of primaeval thing.......after all it is where we all came from......

I think of the sea as being a never ending story......it was there at the birth of the planet and will be there when I am long gone......still endlessly washing the shores of the world......

Artic great books I loved the Liveships madship was sad,

I was checking for any new books from her when I came across her quote about the sea. Made me wonder as I crossed it and still love it.

check out Megan Lindholm as she has books under that name.

Through my bedroom window,its nice when Calm.however when it isa stormy itsa nasty,and a thing to be feared, the power of it is Immense and should never ever be ignored.**M**

Robin Hobb wrote some interesting novels based on the sea.

Robin Hobbs aka Megan Lindholm ( author of fantasty fiction ) states that she saw the sea as a barrier to hold her in.

It made me wonder as others have seen it as a being to be conquered (sp) . or just crossed.

I love the sea, and most days would view it as a friend ....able to take me to new places, but never one to take the "P" out of incase it dumped you on the rocks.

I have a friend who is petrified of the sea, not just sailing on it but even being near it unless it is glass calm.
