My sister lives in North London and they had a test last year I live in South East London and we have not heard anything about it

The Scottish screeening starts at age 50 , as with cervical screening there is a difference between Scotland and England. Scottish smears start at age 20

Bowel cancer screening programme in the North East is through the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sheriff Hill,Gateshead.
People aged 70 or over are not automatically invited but can request a test kit,via freephone number 0800 707 60 60

Little time,little trouble but could be a huge benefit to your health!

Ann - I've just looked out the paperwork that came with my test - it's called the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and ours is run from the local University Hospital herein Nottingham.

There is a free phone telephone number shown, which I will willingly give to you if you pm me - I would put it on here, but not sure if the number is a national number, or whether it's just for the local area.

It says in the letter "people aged 70 or over and not automatically invited for screening, but can requet a test kit by calling the freephone number shown above!.

Once you have participated in the test, and you are given clear results, you will be invited to participate in screening again in 2 years time (unless you have reached youf 70th birthday by then).

Worth a phone call - because it's a really important project to take part in.

Ann...you can request a kit if you are over the age group.
I was lucky as I was 70 when I received mine.

The trouble with this cancer, as with many others, is that usually
there are no symptoms, or we are inclined to ignore them out of embarrassment, until the disease has a real hold and it is much more difficult to treat without really invasive methods.

Ann, I am sure if you asked your doctor they would let you know how to get the kits or do a test for you.

apparetly here in Wales they have sent to kits to all within the age range for home testing - I'm out of the age range so didn't get one, but would certainly take up the offer of a test

Anybody who failed to do the test is really rather silly in my opinion - better to have the test than the disease

Can you have a test for bowel cancer if a parent had it?. My mother died from it you see.

not here, but it needs to be done, my granny died of bowel cancer so it's close to my heart to sort that one out, thanks for bringing it to peoples attention

Yes, like Julia I live in Hertfordshire and had mine last year, and it was clear......

I did wonder if there would be an outcry from the Post Office though because of all the specimens going through the post.....

I'm nudging this because I think it is so important.

It's great to see quite a few people have done the test.

The hospital where I had my treatment is absolutely choc-a-bloc
at the moment with people who have done their tests and been referred back for one reason or another.

The majority of positive tests are because of polpys in the colon which are easily and painlessly removed but if left can turn cancerous in years to come.

I can't promise you a beautiful Italian Consultant but from my experience everyone I had contact with showed me nothing but
kindness and concern for my well being.

I had a sort of kit thing to use which came to all over 60s I think, and mine came back clear, I think anyone who doesn't use the test kit is daft, so easy to get checked out, why risk anything worse?

hiya all,my test was fine, hubbys showed blood so he had to do another test, same thing again, so he was refferd to a cancer screening clinic within 2 weeks,He was then booked into the hospital (with 5 days) for a colonoscopy, this showed he had a few polyps (they were removed) and good old farmer giles lol, every thing turned out well for him.The test isnt to bad i had got it off to a fine art come day 3 lol i was tempted to write on back of it, please dont return to sender lol,anyone who dosnt use the test would be silly cos you never know . like jeans wrote on here, big wave to jean~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ hiya me ikkle love, glad you are ok xxxxxxxxxxxx

Don't think they are offering it here in North Wales but I had a colonoscopy instead.............. Dad died of bowel cancer in 1983 and Mum has been treated for rectal cancer over the last two years, (successfully I may add.... fingers crossed). Myself, two sisters and brother were all tested on the advice of doctors....all clear thank goodness.

Mum was treated at Clatterbridge Hosp. on the Wirral with pioneering treatment, internal, direct radium . probe plus cheamotherapy treatment. Kept her hair, lost loads of weight she couldn't afford to, very tired for months after but now seems as fit as a fiddle at 77....probably fitter than me.
