Thank you girls for those remarks. I was 18 when I went into the Land Army not really I put my age up two years. I tried the wrens first but they knew I was tellig lies about my age. my cousin Doris was the same age and she got through to the Wrens

My hair was always black and curly I never had a perm I had a short bob at one time. when my father in Law was elected Councillor and we went to a ball at The White Heart. but I let it grow back I didnt like it short at one time my hair was down to my waist when I was married my husband use to wash it and Dry it for me. I had it cut shorter when he died

I am surprised it stayed dark my father had the same thick black curly hair and his didnt start going grey till he was nearly 80. he went grey all of a sudden after that..
My sister had Red hair like my eldest son we said she got it from the Scotch side of the family my mother had fair hair. Sheila started going grey when she was about 68 she is slim but I am putting on weight due to having to take 9 steriods a day.It is only this last 18 months but they are trying to get my steriods down .The doctor said steriods make you put on weight.
I always think if you mix with young people and think young ways it goes to helping you stay young.that is why I learn as much as I can I spend time on Open University 2 .

Hi All,

Glad you have PM Jean Mo, I was thinking of doing so.

Mo, I think Victor is my favorite to win ,not that I like him but I think he has been funny this time around I hated him the last time he was on BB.

I don't want Brian to win because he had has his share of money before. I hope Ulrika gets packing first ....don't forget its on 8pm tonight .

Been out gardening today , bought some spring bulbs and they are all out
in my pots, should have a good display next spring .

Getting dinner ready , got pork chop casserole and new potatoes

I thought I hadn't seen Jean's name for a while Mo, I hope she's not having a bad time with her treatment. She's been through a lot lately and must be feeling very weak.

Jean, hang on pet, it'll soon be finished - then you can start building your strength back up.

Mo, are you feeling any better today?

Marilyn was right, we've got a very poorly thread at the moment.

Thank you for sending the photos Marilyn and Pete. I've been out this afternoon, so just had a look at them.

Rita the photos are great, thank you, you look lovely. How old were you on the old (land army) one? You look very young and pretty, looks like you've got the same type of hair as me - thick and curly. You do look a lot younger than you are, and I wasn't expecting your hair to be so dark. I've got more grey than you and I'm 20 years younger...........how'd you manage that? I want to know your secret.

Mo, no problem, I'm up for a challenge again, bring on those exams Shelly. I thought we did very well last time Mo, even if Shelly wasn't impressed by our efforts.............LOL

Just to let you know girls, I have checked back on the thread, and Jean has not been on here, since Monday.
I have sent her a p.m to see if she is o.k.
It is such a worry when we don't hear from our friends for a while.

Mo in Kent Report 9 Sep 2010 16:19

Afternoon everyone.
Thank you for the photo's Marilyn.
Rita you were, and still are a stunner. I bet you had loads of young men chasing you round the farm, when you were in the L.A.

It is worrying that we have not heard from Jean, I do hope she is o.k.
I didn't notice if the birthdays thread was still being done. I know her daughter did it the last time she was unwell.

I phoned my doctors today, for an appointment to get some pain killers. Only to be told she is not in today. So I have to ring after 12 tommorrow.
Perhaps thats a better idea, as it gives time for my scan to reach her, even though they send them via the net these days.
I could not believe that when they told me at the hospital, but I suppose it stop them from being lost in the post.

Final day tommorrow then Marilyn, who do you want to win. It's either Victor or Brian for me, not Ullrrrriikka or moaning minnie Nikki. I was glad that Vanessa went last night. She was turning it into the Vanessa Phelps
show, doing interviews all the time. lol

I hope Linda is coping with the youngsters, and not having a nervous breakdown by now, as I probably would have been by now.
I just haven't got the patience I had many years ago.

Shelly, have you got any more exams coming up.?
If you have Pauline and I are up for a challenge again, thats right isn't it Pauline. ( I can see Pauline hiding behind that chair, saying who me,whats she volunteering me for again. ) lol

Rita Report 9 Sep 2010 14:46

Well I was asked what I looked like ? and some wanted photos of me so now you have them.
mine you this last two years I am begining to get streaks of grey in my hair not too many but they are coming.

I think I will go and hide myself now that I am on file with a photo. anyway if nothing else it will give you all a good laugh. the hats in the Land Army use to be big like Aussie hats but they changed them to bererts. and if we lost any of your unitform we had to pay for the next ones.
I was told the first night I got there put your clothes under your mattress and the legs of the beds in your boots no one can steal then from you.unless you were not in bed. Lol

I brought a news paper this morning I dont buy them very often but wanted to read about Ian Camerom David's father no wonder he said his father was brave that poor man lost both his legs and an eye.

we had rain a little while ago not much as I didnt even know it was raining until I saw someone go by with the brolley up. it is now sunny and not at all cold.

Marilyn
I am pleased you got them I knew they would give you a laugh I look as though I am pregnant in the trousers that was because they were thick corded material

The one of The House with my sister and I in the carriage is much nicer when it enlarged. well i think it is. I had it framed and it hangs on my wall. Sheila as you can see is the one with dark glasses and Grey Hair.
That house is the only a little of that Estate it has its own church and the church is full of plaques with my ancestors names on those that were killed during the war and there are plaques telling you that the Mallocks donated other things to the church. but it has no head stones left only the pilliar on the walls outside the church give those buried there. the villiage is thatched the school house the little cottages and the forge along with other things there are three Lakes (I think it was three) and vast woodland They were so pleased when I told them we were related to them by ancestry and had the wills to prove it.

Everyone tells me I dont look my age and look well, even my own GP tells me that yet I have so many things wrong. He said people would be surprised if they knew.

Pauline that list you have given Marilyn you have the birth place of my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Ackland she was born in Ottery St Mary in 1834 she came from a large family and there are Acklands everywhere they orignated from Quakers in 1600 Elizabeth was 14 years old when she married my Grandfather and he was 11 years older than her. they had 14 children and 4 died. The family came from the Honiton district; so seeing their birth palces made me smile and Marilyn telling us what there fairs were I thought they must have gone to those.

GRMarilyn Report 9 Sep 2010 11:15

Rita,

Loved the photos......you were very pretty as a young girl ...don't know about the trousers ?? Simon Cowell would have loved them above his waist line ..LOL
You look as though you have nothing wrong with you and look great !! I Had visions of you might be a little old white haired lady .

But why haven't you got THAT house ...now ????????
I'll go to Cockington and claim it for you .... right now ..LOL

GRMarilyn

GRMarilyn Report 9 Sep 2010 10:57

Oh my god Pauline....No I don't go to all of them ....LOL

Some of those are morbid..... the Lynch Way is only for the most saddest Devon folk around ....its where they used to takes corpses across the moor for burial, and do you know people still follow that tradition , just a walk in murky soggy moors ......No thanks.

The Pennies Day I have been to.... its just penny throwing that are suppose to be heated and thrown to the poor by well off people back in time to make them laugh at the little hands of the poor ....how sad is that ?
But its not pennies anymore but real silver coins so hundred of kids scramble for them.

Most of the others are during times that I'm not here, but I wouldn't go to them. the Barrels are on November 5th .....Dangerous !! they fill barrels with gunpowder or whatever they can find to run through the streets with them on there shoulders ...Stupid !! should be banned .

My god I think I have been a tour guide this morning ...LOL

Marilyn
that was lovely it had to be read twice to make me understand what some of the words were with the Devonish brogue.
It sound great the ones we went to were not like that yes they did have horses and pens with pigs and sheep in but that was all most of it was f arm produce and flowers and stalls. they had a tall pole which was greased with goose fat (I think it was ) and the guys use to try and climb to the top
I hope the weather stay fine for that show.

Its now a big fair whereupon Farmers show their cattle & machinery and all to do with farming....Stalls etc etc....people get dressed up as old Devon Farmers or Scarecrows.

Its usually the second week in October.

I only go if its not raining ....just love tasting all the cheeses & sausages !!

TAVISTOCK GOOSEY FAIR>

'Tis just a month come Friday next, Bill Champerdown and me
Us traipsed across old Darty Moor, the Goosey Fair to see
Us made ourselves quite fitty, us greased and oiled our hair
Then off us goes in our Sunday clothes behind old Bill's grey mare

Us smelled the sage and onion 'alf a mile from Whitchurch Down
And didn't us 'ave a blow out when us come into the town
And there us met Ned Hannoford, Jan Steer and Nicky Square
And it seemed to we, all Devon must be to Tavistock Goosey Fair

And its oh, and where be a-going
And what be a-doing of there
Heave down your prong and stamp along
To Tavistock Goosey Fair

Us went to see the 'orses and the 'effers and the yews
Us went on all them roundabouts and into all the shows
And then it started raining and blowing in our face
So off us goes down to the Rose to 'ave a dish of tay

And then us had a sing song and the folks kept dropping in
And what with one an' t'other, well, us had a drop of gin
And what with one an' t'other, us didn't seem to care
Whether us was to Bellever Tor or Tavistock Goosey Fair

And its oh, and where be a-going
And what be a-doing of there
Heave down your prong and stamp along
To Tavistock Goosey Fair

'Twere raining streams and dark as pitch when us trotted 'ome that night
An' when us got past Merrivale Bridge, our mare, 'er took a fright
Says I to Bill, "Be careful, you'll 'ave us in them drains"
Says 'e to me, "Cor bugger, why 'aven't you got the reins?"

Just then the mare ran slap against a whacking gert big stone
'Er kicked the trap to flibbits and 'er trotted off alone
And when it come to reckoning, 'tweren't no use standing there
Us 'ad to traipse 'ome thirteen mile from Tavistock Goosey Fair

And its oh, and where be a-going
And what be a-doing of there
Heave down your prong and stamp along
To Tavistock Goosey Fair

Awwhhh did you like that ?????

I did not get up till 7 this morning and I have walked about like a zombi I have no engery at all.
I was thinking to myself this morning when making myself a cuppa before I had a shower. all the things I have to do today. and there was so many little things I made a list. so I wont forget now unless I lose the list.?

I hope to go out and be back before the rain comes. I need a couple of bits from the supermarket and must pick up my books from the Newsagents.

It seems strange on here with all these people missing. do you think we have put them off ?

Marilyn that Goose Fair is that the one when they have things like climbing up the grease pole and pony racing along with the farmers market and stalls? we use to go to some of those but not sure if it is the same as you are speaking about.?

Pauline , Shelly and Linda morning to you.
