I've just googled Skirts Ahoy and it said Esther Williams, Joan Evans, Vivian Blaine were the 3 main ones in it.

Mo, I've brought a bottle of 10 year old Malt, so you can pour Stephen a drink. I'll have wine please, can't drink anything fizzy and whisky's too strong for me.

I can't remember the first film I saw but it definitely had Gabby Hayes and Roy Rogers in it. My parents used to take us every Saturday to see a cowboy film. My dad always had to carry me home and mam carried my little brother, because we would fall asleep before the film finished. My sister complained because she had to walk.

Stephen, I have just googled Skirts Ahoy, and yes you are right. But I have to admit to never having seen it. I much prefer to wear jeans myself these days.
You are surrounded by skirts my friend, us lot. And you being a kilt wearing Scotsman, know how we feel when we have to wear them, it gets a bit chilly round the nether region otherwise.

Hi Marilyn, keep that whip under control, we don't want Stephen getting excited.
It must be nearly worn out now, with all the lashings poor Pete has had to put up with. LOL

Hi all,

Just put young one to bed....I'm tired now ..LOL

I can remember the film White Christmas , with Bing Crosby I was only about 11yrs and we had to walk 4 miles to the cinema and back, but it was the best Christmas that I ever had It really did snow that year and all I could think of was Rosemary Clooney & Bing Crosby and singing white Christmas over & over again.

Maddie I too remember Calamity Jane .....I think the Daffodils song comes to mind !!
And she waved her magic to paint all the rooms pretty ....in Gingham curtains with a white fence all around the house .

Now have I got the right film .....LOL

Pauline I don't think my whip would work on anyone else but Pete.....as it almost talks to Pete before I lash out on it ...LOL

HELP !

All this talk about films from years ago has set my mind wandering back through the decades.

My mum took me to see all the musicals and there was one, if my memory serves me well, it was called......

'Skirts Ahoy' and starred Esther Williams.

Am I correct ?

If not can someone correct me.

Oh my god, I forgot the whisky for Stephen, will have to buy a bottle tommorrow, sorry about that Stephen.

Rita you have bought back so many memories, talking about the old time picture shows.
I think nearly every town in the country had a cinema called the flea pit,and my god they definately lived up to their names. We always came out scratching, and mum would make sure she stuck us in the bath, and rubbed us down with carbolic soap. It was a luxury when she changed over to Lifebouy soap.

South Pacific was a great favourite of mine. " I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair.
I remember when the sound of music, the film first came out, we had to go by coach up to london, to the cinema to watch it. Now that was a great treat for us as kids, to go anywhere other than the flea pit was luxury.

Maddie, the name Calamity Jane, is what my parents used to call me, when I broke anything. I used to be a real butter fingers, still am if the truth be told.
Champagne and cake coming down the cyber hatch Maddie,do you want strawberries as well.

First film I can remember seeing is Calamity Jane. It was on a Saturday afternoon with my Mum and my Nan.

I remember all the wonderful songs.

I REALLY WANTED TO BE CALAMITY JANE.

Saw it again a few years ago. Still wonderful to me.

Got the video and watched that until I could pratically talk along with it.

I dont like to connotation some people have added to Secret Love.

Hee Hah.

whip crack away.

Pauline I have to go back a long way. I think it was, A Roy Rogers with his horse called trigger. film because I recall him singing in it .and I drove my Mum mad because I kept singing the Song. I use to see Gene Autry The singing Cowboy.as well he was one of my favourites at that time. also we saw Laurel and Hardy and The Three marks brothers..that was at the 3 penny Saturday mornng show. we always had western films and a seriel along with Old Mother Riley we went to a little cinema at the bottom of our road. we called it the flea pit as we all use to scratch when we came out.
The seats were close together.and the seat and back closed up flat. so you had to hold the seat and sit down quickly otherwise you landed on the floor. The film nearly always broke down in the middle of it.everyone would whistle and shout and the boys would stamp their feet on the floor. the noise use to give me a headache If we liked a film we would sit on the floor so no one saw us and wait for the next showing and sit and see it again.
There was a man who sat at an organ which was hidden behind a small curtain and he use to play when the interval came.
My gran use to take me to The Rirz cinema in neasden and that was posh. she took 6 of us once with her firend to see Nelson Eddy and Jennet MacDonald and they sung " These a Little white road by a little white Mill "

This has brought back a lot of memories of My gran.bless her my Dad Mum she lived with us.

Hope you had a good day Mo. Loads of luvverly pressies.
Good on yer. Where's my piece of cake. And a glass of bubbly please.

Dont keep on about bus passes. My Oyster costs me 68 quid a month. Diabolical. I know I can use it at the weekend too, but crikey, it makes a dent in my wage packet.

What is all this talk of 69. Its one quid short of my Oyster, thats all I know.

Mo in Kent

Mo in Kent Report 22 Oct 2010 20:43

Shelly, don't wish for a bus pass just yet, you are only young once. Plus I had to cheat to get mine, I lied about my age, I added a few years on, but unfortunately they believed me. It must have been the wrinkles that gave me away.
Well folks I am really and truly full to the gills. I had a three course meal, and I cant move now. I started of with home made vegetable soup, then had half a roast chicken with BBQ sauce and jacket potato, and side salad, followed by caramel apple betty and ice cream.

Stephen number sixty nine (69) is the number before the number seventy(70). Well it was that way when I attended school.
And I am nowhere near that age you saucy monkey.

Anyone for a glass of champers and strawberries, coke for Shelly and me,and a lovely big mug of Ovaltine for Rita.
What would you like to drink Jean, champers or a nice cup of tea.

Pleased you had a lovely day Mo, hope you enjoy your meal tonight. I enjoyed the piece of cake, thanks, it was a bit big but with a knife like that - you couldn't cut small bits.

Rita, I don't know how you expect timid little me to keep Stephen under control. Marilyn's the bossy one on here, she's got a whip she uses to keep Pete under control.

Marilyn bring your whip on the thread, Stephen's getting out of hand. I'm unable to answer his question (me being so sweet and innocent) and I know a good Catholic girl like you won't know what he's talking about either.............so just whip him!

Rita, what was the first film you saw at the cinema?

Rita

Rita Report 22 Oct 2010 16:05

Stephen
sixpence would have brought you two trips to the cinema. or two large bars of chocolate. or 5 weights cigs. in a flap top packet.
3 large ice creams in cones..
two tickets on a tram or bus.
so sixpence now is not worth talking about it buys you nothing. That was in my childhood days.
Mo that is lovely to hear all the nice things you had today for your birthday

Yes that was me in my haydays. Marilyn is just showing off... as if. ?
I paid 3 pennies when I went to the saturday morning cinema. did you see me when I was with Rudolf Valentino ? I could buy an ice cream for 2 pennies.a big one. or 1 penny for a small one.

Marilyn who makes the mess when doing arts and crafts? you or the children.?

I knew that rose would cut your hands because Marilyn picked that from her garden . and forgot to take the thorns off.

Pauline you keep that Stephen under control or send a note to his wife and tell her what he is up to. we cannot have that he could at least put dark glasses .

Someone said you wished you have stopped at 69!

Don't see the significance of that.

Can anyone enlighten me?

PS What is a sixpence ?
