The Packman
You never would know when he’d come for he had three ways at his will From Ball Castle through Glen Chesk; by Armoy & the brandy hill.
Or by Rochane & through the Brade; through Carnlough round Red Bay And up Glen Arif; or he might come by the Island town through Glens Brae.
And any month of the long, long year, himself & his pack might bring Over the ups & down the downs - but the love of his heart was spring.
When the buds would break on the blossoming thorn & the light grew on the hills T’was he would whistle the April roads with little lilts & thrills.
And answer unasked the lovely calls of the blackbirds & the thrushes And still in their throats the envious notes from the best of the April bushes.
“Grand day, thank God” as he’d spread his pack by your leave on the kitchen table And rise up with the weight gone from his back as high as he was able.
I would run from my lessons to listen with the rest & be told that I should behave When he loosened the straps & the lid swung back on the bright magician’s cave.
Scissors & spools of coloured thread; thimbles that shine like guineas Aprons, laces, embroideries & the loveliest pinned-up pennies.
More things that you could ever think would be packed into a space so small By the big merry man with the moving hands, but the ribbons were best of all.
The blues, the yellows, the pinks, the reds round little white cardboard rolled And the light would fall on them one & all; the cherry, the move & the gold.
The very last day he ever came & the ribbons were bright to see He gave me a piece of lilac once, a present from him to me.
It wouldn’t go with my eyes, they said it wouldn’t go with my hair Nor yet with my new cashmere frock or anything I would wear.
It wouldn’t go with my tip-straw hat; lilac & cornflower should be kept apart I wore it the summer through because it went with my heart.
I wore it when he should have whistled as the green spring took the glen When he should have leaned for the latch of the gate but he never came again.
Time & change have had their way & the Packman walks no more No child today gets a ribbon gay that would go with nothing she wore.
It is long ago since he & his like from the roads of the world were driven But I think he opened an honest pack at the end of his road in Heaven.

Marilyn i will wait and hear what Tony has to say. they might have overlooked the card,.but I joined 8 years ago. I can email Margaret at the Lace Museum and ask her. she is related by marriage to me on my Dads side of the family. but I will give it two days and see if I get an email.
I went out this morning and it was blowing like mad the leaves were lifted off the ground it was like a shower of leaves.. I watched the news on TV at lunch time they showed you scotland and there winds 130 miles per hour. they took you along to where there were big trees up lifted by the roots and the announcer said Dingwall that was where my Great great Grandparents came from. That was the first time I had heard that name on TV there is a road near my sister in Hampstead and that is called Dingwall my sister has lived in Hampstead since 1966 and she didnt know that road was there named Dingwall

Good afternoon everyone. Linda, how many are you catering for at the party. Is it going to be all hands on deck, prepping and tidying, or is it down to good ol mum,as is normally happens in most households.
Jeniwren, carry on speaking to us in Romany, it's lovely to hear it. Just as long as it's followed by an explanation, for some of us ficko's (like me) who may not understand. I would love to see a photo of G.Grandma's Vardo. I hope you keep it safetly locked up,as it's such a rarity these days. Do you just travel locally to you in it. Oooh I am so envious, and would love to see it.
It appears that most regions of the U.K,are suffering from high winds at the moment. We have not even stepped over the front doorstep today, it's to flipping windy, and cold out there.
I hope you are all o.k today.

Apparently, China employed three million enumerators for their census.
Results shouldn't be too difficult to count - two parents & one child per household.

Afternoon everyone
A bit breezy here and overcast
Jean glad your foals are doing well, do you have names for them, what colour are they.
Rita I read your thread about the census, I remember the last one, I had a n interview to be an enumerator but I didn't get the job probably because my son was small and I didn't have anyone to look after him when I had to collect forms
hope everyone is ok

Hi all, haven't got much time because I'm going out in a couple of minutes.
Rita I don't think Heather lives in this country, her census form wouldn't be in French if she lived here............ well, I don't think it would.
Different countries might do it in a different way to our country.
Jean, is there any chance of you sending us a photo of your Vardo? I think they're beautiful, haven't seen one since I was a child. I saw a very posh one on the Internet, but I don't think there would have been many as fancy as this...
http://gypsywaggons.co.uk/features-orton-spooner.htm
The ones I remember were usually painted red, green and gold with lots of patterns on them.
Going out now, be back later.

Linda I read what you said on the 2011 census thread. it makes no sense to me what is happening all the things I have read on the internet say we are getting these 2011 census forms next month by post, and they need to be filled in for 27th March every house will get one.
If we dont fill them in we can be sued up to £1000 and have a crimmal record. now people like you and Heather have had yours . someone said only 3% of these will be taken into account.
so somewhere along the way the Government must have slipped up.you dont send a few out to be filled in and tell everyone if you dont get this form you have to contact the Govenment helpline.

Hello everyone, hope your day is going well. am glad to say my back isn't as painful now and the bruising is fading, can walk almost normally now. Rita I hope Mike is progressing well and feeling a bit better. the foals are both thriving, they love to go out in the paddock with their Mums and run around like little rockets. The mare who lost her foal is acting as foster mum to a foal who's Mum rejected him, [ not one of mine] so she is happy. Marilyn, yes grushi is romany for money, sorry I think in romany and sometimes forget to turn it into english. Mo, hope you have had good news about your nephew. yes, my Gt. Grandmother had a lovely vardo, I was born in it, and just before she died she gifted it to me, I have a lovely vanner horse who pulls it, in summer I sometimes take to the roads in it for a couple of days. Cath, I do hope you are feeling better, have the antibiotics started to work now? Patricia, Pauline, Maddie, Yvonne, Stephen and Dermot, hope you are all ok. If I forgot anyone I'm sorry, must be my age, memory not what it used to be. Go with God and in good health. Jeniwren xx
