Rita . Can you remember the old threepenny bit that used to keep your stocking up with when the suspenders little rubber button fell out ?
The first stockings I ever wore were to church Christmas Eve and it was part of my Christmas present that my mother allowed me to open.but they were kept up with elastic garters I must have been all of sixteen ,but my legs were so thin that while I was walking to church ahead of my mother with my sister ....mother yelled out Marilyn your stocking have fallen down !! LOL Well it was so funny my legs were that thin garters couldn't keep them up .
Oh happy days.....

PMSL Marilyn, I wish I'd been behind you when your stockings fell down.
Rita, what did you have to do to get those stockings and chocolates off the Yanks....LOL, is there something you aren't telling us?..........LOL
My mam said she used to do that with her legs, can't remember if she used tea or gravy to brown them, she used an eyebrow pencil to draw the black line down the back.
Marilyn, Jimmy Ruffin sang 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted'.

I'm a little younger than you ladies reminising!! Born 1952, right at the end of rationing, I don't truefully remember myself. Pocket money was 6d. First job was a paper round 7 days a week for about 10s Second was at a hairdressers 2/6 an hour a whole 10s for all day saturday. When I left school at 16 I worked for Boots a s a dispenser trainee and earned the whole amount of £6 5s 6d half to give to my Mum for house keeping. I didn't bring home that amount but Mum had £3. I had 5 younger brothers and sisters so had to help. I only had one saturday off a month. But at least the only Sunday opening was about once a month for emergency prescriptions. I stayed with them for over 9 years. Then I worked in a school laboratory for 2 years. Leaving when I had my first daughter.
Oh the good old days

My neighbour worked in a bra factory !!! So many pieces to make such a small item. I wore a bra from about 13 and hated that, still the same wish I didn't need to but others envy us. Never satisfied are we. I had the really thick stockings for school when I first dropped socks!! But then they had to be repaired when they snagged on the desks. I remember my god mother bought me some bright blue stockings one christmas, boy were they the bees knees. Then there were the first tights cos our skirts had shrunk in the wash LOL. Boy were they expensive.. Like 10s when I earned that £1 a week. By the time I worked in Boots white was fashionable. And we weren't allowed to wear trousers in the winter at all only the window dressers. In the summer we had to wear tights too no bare legs on duty.
Be back later

Well got the washing dry again today, oh goody more ironing for tomorrow. Got to keep it down for anything we might need at the weekend for France. I'm going to take warmer clothes but in layers, hubby reacons it's going to stay warm , but cooler in the evenings and morning. Doesn't leave long for it to be warm to my mind. Finished one more invite. The baby boy came on Friday and has taken the cardigans and hat home with him. So that is ready to be used. Managed another bag of garden rubbish will try to do some more tomorrow. So much prunning and tidying to do. Who knows what it will be like when I get back.
Will check in later

Linda, I know what you mean about the garden, I spent all day yesterday cutting back and tidying but I've still got loads to do.
I got a lot of washing done today as well which means lots of ironing tomorrow - what exciting lives we have.

Marilyn do you mean the little silver three penny pieces. ?Mum use to stick them in the christmas pudding on christmas day and my sister and I thought how lucky we were always getting one each. Those rubber buttons were a very good thing you could boil your things that had them on I think they first came out o Libertie Bodices.
Pauline you naught girl . They were just being friendly. I use to walk through their work shop everyday on my way to one of the offices and they use to call out I use to smile and sometimes I would dance with them when they were at the Cricklewood Palis. . we used Charcol for the line down our legs at the back..
Linda you are the same age as my daughter Rita-Jean she was born in November 1952 she was an eighth month baby
I also had two pairs of those cone shaped bra they use to stand out in a point when you had a tight sweater on it use to embbrass me I was wel developed but was very thin. they use to call me skinner ribs then.I was tall as well which didnt help. That was good new about your friend Sue were there many competitors. ?
