My Dad was evacuated to a farm near Haye on Wye from Liverpool in 1940. He loved it so much that he didn't return home until 1946. If my Nan wanted to see him, she had to go there., Even when he did his National Service he still went back to visit sometimes, when he was on leave.

He lost touch with the farmer and his housekeeper after he married Mum. In the 1970's my OH and I found the farm in question, made a note of the phone number from the board advertising B & B. Dad got in touch and both the farmer and his housekeeper where still alive. Mum and Dad used to visit twice a year after that until my Dad died.

For him it was a good experience but most of his mates returned to Liverpool after the May Blitz because they were so unhappy.

its a real insite and very eye opening to the lives of children int he war
must have been a very scary time for them :(

I was evacuated at the age of 5yrs6mths, a very fragile, sickly little girl. Living in the country improved that and at almost 74, I am anything but fragile! I did write some articles for our church magazine, but I dont know how to copy from Word to here, and they might be too long anyway. I am still living in the area I was evacuated to, but did go back for a few years after the war.

You would have thought this would have been a subject GR would have made a request stickie post about before now.


The woman who searched for her half siblings...... Did she find them?. I got waylaid with PC crashing so didn't see the rest of it.

I hope it turned out alright for her and they were welcoming?. It doesn't always have a happy ending unfortunately :-(

My OH Alan was sent to yorkshire and he was just saying that he another boy and a girl ran away and got quite a way before they were caught that was the second place he had been to the first Earls Barton in Northampton we wnt ther once and the little house was a resturant now.

I was evacuated to Kidderminster during the war and I wonder if anyone else was sent there too. My sister,who was also evacuated to Kidderminster, was billeted in a house with servants, a chauffeur and a gardener , but she spent most of her time with the servants, in their quarters.I was billeted with the Chauffeur's wife at the bottom of the drive. Nevertheless, we both had quite a good time, but it was nice to be back home again.
