I always swear by the bog basic Indiset machines. Could never see the point of machine with all the different functions and flashing lights, bells and whistles. Most people on use 2 or 3 programs anyway. Also Indiset spares are easy and cheap to get, if necessary.

I've got a Bosch and think it's marvellous (also have the tumble dryer - which I could not do without).

It's simple to use, is quick, has a short-wash function and a quick spin.

Bosch for me too. It replaces a much-used and very old Bosch. They are quiet too.

Consider energy rating and size of drum and buy to suit your person need.
Some machines seem to have enough buttons to fly us to the moon !Most people seldom use so many.
I like a delay start function so that I can make use of cheaper electricity overnight.

blimey I'm spoilt for choice here!

friend of mine says hers made a similar noise and it was 'the brushes' which are easily replaceable on some makes.

will see if it still does it when I use it next (am putting it off!) and if so will ring my man first. If he can't do it cheaply then I will make good use of all your recommendations.

thank you so much everyone for your advice.

Maz,

I've got a 5 year old Zanusi ..... brilliant machine.
Have a Candy drier .... thermostat went and I got the new part and replaced it myself! (I'm a clever girl!)

Have had Hotpoint and Indiset before. Hated the Hotpoint, loved the Indiset. Had a very old, third-hand Indiset for years and years and was probably the best machine I ever had.

Be aware that the Indiset factory has closed down so don't know how easy it will be to get parts now.

Maz

Just bought a Beko Tumble Dryer, it is a lot better than me hoptpoint one.

Bought Beko appliances for my caravan, never had any problems with them, unlike my hotpoint washing machine!

took Curry's 4 days to get my washing out, machine was only 2 days old when drum colapsed, the smell was awful and they handing my washing back to me in a black bin liner....Yuk

Had a Hotpoint hated it.....Zanussi was okay but love the AEG

Hoobity Report 28 Nov 2008 23:56

1st washer was a servis the engineer was out that much we were best friends. 2nd was Zanussi, bless it, it was 15 years old when we had to let it go, never gave me a problem,. Next was Hotpoint, lasted about 18 months, hated it and when I smelt smoke I just knew I wanted rid of it. Lastly I bought a Baumatic, I know, you never heard of it, well neither had I but thought what the hey I will give it a go, price not bad. Engineer been out 3 times in 3 years, first time it was still under warranty and they came out in 2 weeks, engineer in my area was on maternity leave so had to have the bloke who did the borders of Scotland, he told me hotpoint were notorious for bursting into flames as he had worked for them for years before going to Beaumatic, so even though he may have been lying I have been put off ever getting a Hotpoint again. Next time it went wrong it took 5 weeks for the engineer to come out as he was very busy, 4 weeks the next time.
So what ever you do don't get a Baumatic, oh and by the way the washer talks to you, whatever programme you select a womans voice tells you what you have just done, gets really annoying after a while, funny thing was they didn't tell me this in the shop when I bought it, so was a bit of a shock when she suddenly piped up. It doesn't wash the clothes very good either.

I have a Whirlpool Duet and love it.
It holds LOTS of laundry, so you will need the matching dryer which I don't have. In the mean time I have to split the load into two because it doesn't all fit into a regular dryer.

I think it can hold 18 pairs of jeans, or something like that :)

Just be a bit wary about recommending machines that were manufactured under a particular brand name several years ago as all might not be what it seems.

For instance Hotpoint and Indesit are now the same. Zanussi used to be good but were taken over and the quality suffered soon afterwards, so went from being one of the most reliable to one of the least, although they seem to have got better in recent years.

AEG took over Electolux

etc etc.

Tumble dryers should be banned as they are the biggest waters of energy you can find in an appliance.

My daughter has a Dyson which cost a fortune when she bought it. They have now stopped making them. She has had a few problems but they are really good at fixing it and have never charged her a penny when they come out to fix it. She thinks it is a shame that they have stopped making them.

I have a White Knight tumble dryer which I had never heard of before I bought it. It is A energy rated and has been great so far, I have had it five years.

My zanussi jet system has never seemed to get the washing properly clean no matter what powder I use. My OH is always complaining about it.

well it is still banging, so am going to get 'the man' round tomorrow.

thanks for all the info - I'm completely confused now!!! hope he can fix it!!

Angela - I saw something about the Dyson on a site and thought it looked fab, then found out they'd stopped making it. apparently you can fit a king size duvet in it?!?! then I realised it must have been really expensive too!

You can fit a kingsize duvet in it and it was about a thousand pounds when she bought it. She loves it.
