If I remember right,Balkan Sobranies were otherwise known as "Black Russian" the different coloured ones were Cocktail Cigarettes made by the same firm.**M**.

I loved the corner shop
Mum would send me up for a loaf of bread (unsliced)
by the time I got home all the corners of the loaf would be nibbled off.
I also bought her ciggies for her 5 Woodbines lol.
The grocer 9 times out of 10 wouldn't have Woodbines as there was a shortage then. I always for some reason remember the name of the ciggies he used to try to palm off on me. Turf, My mother hated them.
The corner shop sold just about everything you could think of. Sugar, flour from a sack. You could buy a bag of broken biscuits for a few pence.
My favourite was an Ice Cream Sandwich he made them with a little machine. Adults only ate Ice Cream sanwiches Kids had cornets and I used to feel so grown up eating them.
Thanks for the Memories
Oh Happy Days

Suzian, the Balkan Sobranies were the black ones with gold tips, the pretty coloured ones were called cocktail cigarettes & I think they are still around.... they were up until two years ago, cos until I packed up smoking my daughter used to buy me some each Christmas !!

The posh cigs sound fascinating Sue.......my parents just stuck with the No 6 or perhaps Embassy on occasion........until they both gave up in their middle ages.
Neither of them ever touched alcohol........which makes it a bit of a puzzle to me that I'll drink anything ( with in reason ) if it has alcohol in it.....lol

Hi Amanda

I remember a queue for hot cross buns at the local bakery.

Balkan Sobranie's were class cigarettes - they came with gold filter tips and were wrapped in a variety of pastel shades. They also had a strange smell - a bit like Marlboroughs.

Mum was dead cool at Christmas - Balkan Sobranies and her annual gin and tonic. Dad, on the other hand, had his Capstan Full Strength and more than a couple of bottles of Newkie Brown.

that having been said, they were very happy. A classic case of opposites attracting.

Lol Sue

Hello Sue..........I can't say I recall bread queues in corner shops........lol.......most corner shops couldn't hold a queue anyway.

I've heard of Capstans but not the Balken cigs....they sound a bit smelly..........lol

suzian Report 17 Nov 2008 21:32

Were there bread queues there, too Amanda?

My dad was a REAL man - he smoked Capstan Full Strength - filter tips were for wimps.

Mum, on the other hand, had the odd Balkan Sobranie at Christmas. All different colours.
