I agree with Karen - no wonder the poor bloke was locked out. With codes like that he should just go home!

Sorry - I'm a sucker for number puzzles!

All that algebra you did at school has to be useful for something ;-)

He could just kick the door in. If he's getting as frustrated as I am by this puzzle he'd be able to do that really easily!

He could call a locksmith, it would be faster than trying to solve the puzzle :)

I think the clues are inconsistent.

If the digits are abcde

then c+e = 14
therefore a+b+d=16 (from last clue)

But a= 2b+1 and d=b+1

Putting them together gives
2b+1+b+b+1=16
4b+2=16
4b=14
b=3.5 which is unacceptable as it needs to be whole number.

Damn - missed it.

I can come up with 4 possible combos but they equal

20, 24, 28 and 32.

Is it definitely do-able?

CATHKIN

CATHKIN Report 13 Nov 2008 23:34

A man is locked out of office and is trying to remember pin number. Here`s the clues.-what are the 5 numbers?
1. THE 5TH AND 3RD NUMBERS ADD UP TO 14
2.THE 4TH NUMBER = 2nd number plus 1
3.1ST NUMBER =2ND NUMBER TIMES 2 minus 1
4.2ND AND 3RD NUMBERS EQUAL 10
5.ALL NUMBERS ADD UP TO 30.
I can`t get it !!
