Shame the jumble sale wasn't up to much Amanda, I must suggest my son goes to some sometimes, he goes to charity shops and gets things and sells on ebay for a profit, he has two body boards in his flat at the mo lol, paid very little for them! Not sure how he will send those on, will have to sell locally methinks!

Better luck next time!

Good for you Sharron : )

It will probably go into the naval collection in Pompey Library one day.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 25 Oct 2008 17:07

I know what you mean Sharron .

Well it must be worth a great deal if it is that rare.

How about asking a museum if they would know its value ?

Sharron

Sharron Report 25 Oct 2008 17:04

I don't really trust antiquarian bookshops.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 25 Oct 2008 16:55

Sharron...........have you thought about taking your rare book into an antiquarian book shop ?

I've got a copy of The Brittanica by Camden., my Dad rescued it off a dump at a gravel pit back in the 50's........sadly it doesn't have any of the maps in it ( they are each worth a small fortune ) but the book itself is rather beautiful. He had it re-bound in the 70's.

I don't know about the walking stick.

I have too many books I have bought at jumblies.
There used to be Nelson Birthday lectures in Portsmouth Library.A man did a couple of lectures about the John Franklin expedition and, naturally, I had to argue the pont about something. He mentioned that I would never see the book but the definitive answer was in the R.J.Cyriax book. Well,of course I will see the book, I've got it (silly man).

Apparently the book was printed in 1939 and stored in a warehouse that was bombed. There are hardly any copies in the world. Mine must have come from a jumble sale.

I have e-mailed a couple of dealers to find out what it is worth but they don't reply. They think it is a wind-up.

Lol Sharron.........did your aunt manage to get her walking stick back ?

Strangely enough " the Stinkers" weren't about today.........perhaps they knew that there would be no bric-a brac for sale.

The jumble sale elite getting all the Mings.Do they look like they found the Mings? In my experience many of them do ming a bit.

We used to watch a woman who went to every jumbly in town to see what she brought home that week. The best day was when she went walking by pushing her shopping trolley with a ladder in it.

She always wore the same clothes.

My aunt put her walking stick on the table to try something on and they sold it.

Your very lucky Paul.......in these days with all the day time tv programmes about antiques / collectables every one is an "expert".........but the odd item slips through the net of the eagle eyed.

: )

Well, I liked it. But I thought "It looks old, and it's in good nick, it's got to be worth more than £7!", So I thought I couldn't refuse. - Didn't bother haggling with that one either. lol

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 25 Oct 2008 16:24

Well Paul I was rather hopeing to find a Ming vase today..........lol

Good for you in finding such a worthy item.Did you have an idea that the map was going to be worth a lot or did you just buy it because you liked it ?

I love a jumble sale too Although haven't been to for ages!

Last time I went to one was at Huntingdon. I brought an Antique map of Norfolk for £7. Got it valued, and it was worth - quite a bit more - £1500. lol

I remember going to the jumble sales with my mum when I was younger, she used to ask me to haggle with the "jumbler" for items she wanted, as me being a kid, used to get them cheaper! My mum used to set me a price, and whatever got the item to, I was allowed to keep the difference.

I remember my best one was a decorative plate I managed to get down from £5, to 50p! lol

No Margaret , that must be the other Amanda.

She has a thread about cooking apples ( on chat I think ? ) and the A-Zof garden flowers.

That sounds like a swoop Paul......no chance of a Harrods anything in my neck of the woods......lol

I once brought a Harrods wicker basket from a jumble sale for 20p!

I use it to store the loo rolls.

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 25 Oct 2008 15:59

Liz.........well that was a dull jumble sale : (

Not even any bric-a brac..........I'm disappointed.

Got a few items of clothing and two Puddle Lane ladybird books.

I think I'll have to pester my OH to take me to some village jumbles........might find better pickings there.

I daren't go anywhere near any jumble sales at the mo, as I would not have any will power to resist bargains lol
Hope you have a lovely time

Liz.........I think I'd probably go berserk if I was let loose in the jumbly you are speaking about........lol
It sounds fantastic.

I'll be off in half an hour to join the queue for the jumble today.
It is rather a large hall that had a stage at one end.
On the stage are usually the small items of furniture etc and most of the jumble goers head straight up there..........how nobody has ever been shoved off onto the table of glassware and china I don't know, its like diceing with death sometimes......lol

I wonder what treasures I'll find today : )

Amanda, you would love the Jumbly in Norwich today then! It is in a lovely hall in the centre of Norwich and the Sea Scouts organise it, renting out stalls to all and sundry so there are dozens of different stalls, used to go a lot when my son was small but daren't go nowadays, I have enough 'treasures' for the mo. When I have finally sorted out my house and all my stuff, maybe I can start going to sales again and finding bargains lol
Have fun
