On the question of profits, given their size and turnover, the utility companies are not actually making huge profits.

There was talk of a £1,000,000,000 (£1 billion) windfall tax - sounds a lot but only amounts to a one off payment of £50 to each household in the country.

The thread may have been up in september, I was away for 4 weeks so sorry if I am repeating something.

Athena do you cook with gas, this is a four bed house, I actually don't think our gas is too bad, but maybe it too will go up again with the next statement.

Ann, I think I posted on a similar thread the other week about this.

My gas (with British Gas) payments have gone up from £20 a month to £86 a month - and I'm out all day at work and don't get home till 8pm of an evening so not using anything - my central heating is only on during severe chilly times for an hour in the morning and hour at night.

Haven't had my electric payments revised yet - but no doubt that will go up a lot, too.

It's totally ridiculous - they are making extortionate profits from us all...

they have just put up our electric bill to £49 a month, gas is £35 a month that is £1022 a year for the two, both with Npower. We get a refund, I think will be £80 next April for having gas an electricity with them, so that is £942 a year.

All cooking is by electricity, heating/hot water is gas.

We are retired and home a lot of the time.

How does that compare with other people?
